All I seem to read on this forum now are storys about how hard done by bikers are.

This may be because they have been caught breaking the speed limit, jumping a red light, have crashed following an error in judgement and now the police want to prosecute me or have been caught using a bike that is not fit to be on the road.

Then there are all the other roadusers who are all out to get you. Evil people in 4x4s and white vans. Chavs/normal people who chose to drive cars and not bikes but have to start by using a cheep shitty car but what the hell we will tar them all with the same brush. I bet they don't drive at speeds in excess of 120mph.

But none of these compare to the most hated of all motorists....people who wash their windscreens on their cars and don't think to look behind and see if the biker behind has their visor open or not. Bastards eh! Not considering the welfare of the biker who is following to close behind. That don't matter i'll just smash their car up.

Maybe some of it is because the users of this forum are young, immature and inexperienced. Mabe it because they are narrow minded and have no consideration for others but if things bother you that much then stop riding. It's your choice. Nobody makes you do it. You know whats involved.

It's not because they're bikers, it's because they're internet bikers.

And as we all know, the internet was designed purely for people to whinge and be opinionated. And to download pornography.

Absolutely spot on! One of my biggest bug-bears with this forum. "It wasn't me, it was the fiesta."

I do agree with you to a certain extent, people are allways way to quick to blame other people, the two times i come of both have been my fault.

However there are still dick heads that drive on the roads, and to be honest 'Chavs as such are people you need to look out for' i find bus drivers and prats that dont look for you when pulling out the worst. People washing their windscreen is a pain in the ars but most people wouldnt even realise the bike behind would get covered, and if you stick your visor down or slow down a bit to increase the gap you will be fine. But i love riding and would never stop, so these things have to be put up with and youve just gotta get on with your life, rather than moan all the time and let it wind you up into a frenzy.

Maybe it is because they are the only person in the world. Everyone else is just generated by a diety / computer / mind altering drug to keep the person amused.

More seriously, pretty much agree with you. But some kind of equal consideration would be nice.

All the best

I always think that if car drivers are such a problem to you, it doesn't say much for your riding skills.

good god be carefull....that nearly sounds like an honest common sense post....on the internet!!

seriously do agree with you,

maybe its because there are so many bikers moaning about other road users and unwilling to take responsibility for there own riding skills (or lack of) that bikers get a bad name?

I think its more to do with the fact that most ride dangerously, dismiss it with "I can handle it, I have x years experience" and blame somebody else (usually the police) when they crash. Rolling Eyes

It's because they've all fallen into the trap that it's ok to blame someone else for their ineptitude, rather than actually stand up and take responsibility for their own actions and general fuckwittery.

The sooner people start to take their own lives into account the less whining and bitching there will be!

I disagree. There is a great deal of what I would term "Rank bad driving" on the roads of the UK.

People fail to look when pulling out of junctions, indicate the wrong way on roundabouts, indicate their intention to turn right or left by slamming on the brakes, make sudden lane changes on motorways without reference to the mirrors or indicators.

Furthermore, they sit in the fast lane of empty motorways, drive down the bloody NSL coast road near me in processions at 40mph while gawping at the scenery, they spill diesel all over the carriageway, throw lit cigarette butts at me, overtake when I'm sat in the crown of the road indicating right, they drive round corners at 25mph while constantly dabbing the brakes then accelerate to 80 on the straights and try to force me off the road when I'm riding my small bike.

In fact, every time I go out on my bike, someone makes an attempt to kill me. I consider this normal now and expect it, I'd be dead otherwise. Doesn't mean I have to like it.

Agree, but it is not just bikers but all british people we seem to be great at it. Complaining that is, not downloading porn. Very Happy

arent you taught never to take another road users actions for granted and always assume they will do the worst in any given situation?

i was. both when learning to drive a car and when i was learning to ride a motorbike.

you cant affect what other road users are going to do so armed with the information above the responsibility falls upon us ourselves to take the necessary precautions at all times.

anything over and above that which results in an accident or worse can only be seen as not taking the necessary precautions in that given situation IMO of course.

Of course I was taught that. As I said, I'd be dead otherwise.

Doesn't make them right.

With your attitude, why not do away with traffic laws and driving tests all together. Let's just have a big old free for all where everyone does what they please.

As of today, I will start driving my car on the right side of the road for five minutes in every hour. If you crash into me head-on it is your own fault, you should have anticipated I was going to do this and taken the necessary precautions

no need to be flippant about it.

the point was your only responsible for your own actions and should drive/ride accordingly.

I'm sure it would be the same if this was a car forum. Cagers pull out on each other , get in each others way and try to kill each other regulalry. We are not singled out as bikers we are just more vulnerable to their vagaries.

I don't consider myself hard done by.... I spend alot more time gloating about how great bikes are than I do whinging.
Mostly this involves discussing never having to wait in traffic jams, leaving later and arriving earlier to work than friends in cars, or parking up outside the restaurant/bar on a night instead of spending 25mins looking for a space. 0-60 times also tend to amaze.

Besides, if you want to see bad driving, try living in france. I think they have the worst accident rates in europe, especially down in the south. Red lights are optional, every other car you see has battle scars from previous crashes (so they care even less about having another one). Every time I'm back in the UK the driving is a breath of fresh air by comparison. Alot of people I know here (french, spanish, italians) consider british people to very good drivers.

It is true, a lot of complaining takes place. But that's what forums are for. Sharing experiences, the good... and the bad.

Quite.

And my point was that there are some appalling drivers out there and that I feel it is perfectly reasonable to complain about it rather than sit quietly and accept behaviour on the part of others that puts my life at risk.

I don't feel that this makes me a 'whinger' as was implied by the initial post in this thread. It is one of the aspects of motorcycling that is likely to have a direct and serious effect on my health and wellbeing.

Given that this is a motorcycle discussion forum, it seems to me that there couldn't be a more appropriate place to air such concerns. In voicing and discussing these views and oppinions (even if they are overgeneralisations), it brings some aspects of road use and the behaviour of other road users to the fore.

Consider, is it a bad thing to work on the asumption that everyone who drives a 4x4 or a white van is a derange dmaniac who is deliberately trying to kill you? Or that anyone riding a moped dressed in tracksuit bottoms and trainers is intent on crashing in front of you?

It has been pointed out that it is possible that some users of this forum are "young, immature and inexperienced". Well, hopefully they learn something from the discussions. They will bring a certain amount of what is commonly referred to as "willy waving" into the mix as well but that comes with the territory I'm afraid.

I object to the idea that it is 'young, immature and experienced' that post this shit on the forums. Anyone can be immature and inexperienced, whether it be the childish adult or the born again biker coming back to the harley. Being 'young' has no real bearing on maturity or experience.

I'm just tired of being told that my opinion doesn't count and that I am stupid because I happened to be born in a different year. It just so happens that some of the older members of this forum sometimes come across as arrogant condescending pricks, but no one seems to pick up on it.

Dont worry you will under stand when your older Very Happy

Lol sorry i had to. I can see where your coming from it doesnt just take young people to be imature and inexperianced, ive met people that are older than me but not even mature enough to make it through school, let alone live in the real world. And same again ive have met alot of inexperianced people, myself included as i am new to the biking scene with only a few months experiance behind me.

End of the day everyone has to start somewhere and learn, so i think a bit of tolerance for new and inexperianced riders is required. But people being jsut plain stupid and not thinking about anyone elses safety should not be accepted

I agree with the OP in part that sometimes there tends to be trend from time to time for accident prone riders to try and lay the blame elsewhere and unfortunately there ability to learn from such incidents will be great hindered by such an atttiude.

However I think that such stereotypes are often warranted.
After all hows is a stereotype created in the first place.
It's born out of common or regular experience.

In saying that I think such stereo types relating to vehicles/drivers or even riders which are often invovled in causing an accident or near miss can be used as a tool to promote awareness and defensive riding.

So I'd say in a strange sort of way these posts can have a small benefit to others.

I also think it's good to vent from time to time as per the original intention of this post I believe.
It would just be nicer to see it done a little more constructively Thumbs Up

my mate came off his bike and it set on fire he was 30 feet away with ripped tendents and two big scabs on his knees, other wise ok.

a car crash's and sets on fire, the person inside is cooked, yea yea so fucking safe realy.

I tend to agree with Stink here. It's not that people (or most people) just like to whinge, it just happens a lot here because bikers are so often influenced by the actions of others on the road. It's part of motorbiking and as riders people should be aware of it and accept it's going to happen - but that doesn't mean they have to be happy about it and just clam up while Ms. Makeup in her Ka pulls out on them.

Fair enough if you think that, but it's a load of dreck. Look at the accident/death ratio for cars and bikes, and you'll find that for one thing fire must be a cause of death incredibly rarely.

Seems it mostly is the young posting such though. Much Rarer see older inexperienced bike riders saying the same.

I don't think people are saying that /all/ younger forum members are like that - just that most of the cases have been younger members.

Being young definitely does have some bearing on experience I'd say. While a 35 year old may have little road experience. We can be pretty damn sure a 17 year old hasn't had more than one year's road experience.
(Unless they've lived in countries with different laws, etc)

I'd say it often is.
It's been openly pointed out to me that people have taken my attitudes to be arrogant - now I believe this is in cases where I'm am sure that I /am/ right, but then does this make it any less arrogant?
In cases recently, people that have acted in a rather condescending manner usually have had it pointed out (and have usuaully replied that they don't care, if I remember).
