What happens to an engine when u drop a bike?

Hi all

I changed bikes recently from a 600 Hornet to a Kawasaki VN1600, safe to say there is a bit of a weight difference Smile

I was out on saturday and came to a very dodgy bit of country road. I had stopped to make a right turn and lost my balance dropping the bike on its side Sad

After a few seconds the engine cut out and I managed to get it back on its side stand. It took a few attempts to get the engine running again but everything seemed fine and I got home in one piece.

However When I started the bike today I could swear the engine sounds a bit different, kind of knocking sound. Now this could be my imagination as TBH ive never really listened to the engine carefully. What do you guys think? What damage can be caused when a bike falls on its side?

dropped mine last week & it did exactly the same thing - the engine was flooded

But it didn't knock afterwards

You flooded the engine. It should be alright later.

If it was laid on its side running for some time it might be starved of oil and this could soon cause problems.
Otherwise I think its your imagination.

Could something have got slightly bent so its now just contacting the engine resulting in a diferent noise as it vibrates against it?

being fair pal, i'd say it's just paranoia - and it's perfectly normal.

if the motor starts ok and revs ok, then chances are you're just fearing the worst - it happens all of us, don't worry about it. Wink

Did exactly the same with mine.

Flooded it, got it started and was 'Hmmm, whats that slight rattle noise coming from the engine now' but to be honest it was proberly there beforehand, i just hadn't noticed it.
