Filtering question..

This may be a stupid question but can you tell me if I am doing the right thing.

As you can see by my detailed diagram I have filtered past cars and wish to get into the gap. Is it right to go to the car infront and pull in behind it or to just nip infront of the car to the side of me?

I do the green arrow..

red looks like you are cutting other driver and don't want to carry on filtering.
green looks fine, as though you are going to carry on filternig-just don't stay like that if you aren't going anywhere-you'll annoy the driver

I don't know if the green arrow way is the right way, but the red arrow way is certainly the wrong way. Most motorcyclists I've seen do what you do.

Personally I just tuck in behind the front car leaving enough room to go back out again if needed(as the green arrow but not so far in to the center of the car and as close).

I usually do the green, but you'd be suprised at the fucks who undertake you as they take off like a rocket JUST because you are filtering. If someone has left a big enough gap, get in there, less chance the cager can fuck you over.

just sit as close to the center line as you can, don't get in behind the car in front, you don't know if he is gunna slam on his brakes because hes pissed off that he has to wait in traffic, and you can go past,
i would only go in behind the car in front if i had to go into a side street or had to move out the way of a bus.

If the cars are moving (assume yes, as no-one ever leaves a gap like that), stay on the white line.

Green is better than red for a single rider, except that you're on his bumper. But I would say stay out on the white line unless there's an immediate hazard. Can't see from the diagram if there's meant to be a junction up ahead.

Good advice is to think of filtering as creating another lane for bikes. Act exactly as if you were moving between lanes on a dual carriageway (except don't signal). If you intend to filter past the third car as soon as it's safe, staying on the white line keeps you visible and conveys your intent clearly. Tucking between cars hides you from traffic and means you have to manouver yourself in order to make progress. It also means you have to watch your back for other bikes.

When you want to move between the filtering "lane" and the proper lane, do proper observation etc.

I agree with BFG. Just stay on the white line, and tuck in when necessary. But also watch out for the ar$ehole$ that move out to the white line to stop you.

A shout of "Wanker" as you eventually go past is the key.

My view is that I'd go somewhere in between both the red & green arrow - Iwouldn't go all the way into the middle lane - just enough so that the driver in front 'sees' your headlight in his wing mirror so (in theory) he's aware of you & that you can nip out again if you want to continue filtering.

Keep yourself in the line of sight of the car in front's offside mirror. If you move out of it he might lose sight of you "between" his mirrors. It also gives you the best view of the road ahead, increases your chances of being spotted by other bikes filtering in the opposite direction and gives you an escape route if the traffic in front does any emergancy braking.

If you are filtering on a dual-carriageway between two lanes, any car on the right would lose sight of you from their mirrors (or check their mirror and not see you there) if you have moved to the left. If the gap you are moving into is big enough to hold another car there's a high risk that you will get lane-chopped, especially if you approaching stationary traffic or an off-ramp. People often use junctions to jump queues by going down the off-ramp and up the other side, and if they spot the chance to jump out of the queue they might jump lanes without checking for bikes.

The only time I move across to the left is when both lanes are slowing but the right is more congested but the left has large gaps (four car lengths or more). This happens often again when slow-moving cars jump out of the left lane to take an off-ramp leaving large gaps. The odds on getting lane-chopped here are so great I move to the far left until I've caught up behind the car up in front. This gives the best possible chance of being spotted by, or avoiding getting hit by a car switching lanes suddenly.
