Just in case anyone is wondering the Sandisk ultra 2gb memory card works fine in the Rider.

Its just a shame that after installing the UK and European maps and then connecting to TomTom Home that the map updates won't fit on.

How would one go about downloading the maps to put on the card? I want to get the European maps (and ideally every map) - would it be possible to put them on one big card? What version of the maps would I need to download?

Thanks
Joe

Got a Rider couple of days ago.

Found a website with a few downloads on and got them on easily. They didnt hawever have the speed camera which is the main one i wanted.

I got the download from the GPS website but cant get it working.

Am I right in thinking you download it, open all the folders, then copy all the files in the folders into the 'great britan' folder on the Tomtom??

Pretty much, you then have to go in and you will have extra POI's. Set these up to warn when near and you're done. The easiest way is just use the big file (all cameras), otherwise you have to setup each type (mobile, fixed, 30, 40, 50 etc).

I downloaded the European maps from TomToms website as I couldn't find them any where else.

The files were downloaded as a Zip file and there is a setup file in there that you run. I think you can chose where to install it as well so you should be able to chose the Rider.

I think you can also use TomTom home to buy and install the updates as well.

Be aware that with the speed camera alerts, 90% of them don't actually have a speed camera there.

The rest of the time you are passing a speed camera on a different, but nearby road, there maybe used to be a speed camera there, there is a speed camera sign or you are passing somewhere the police often set-up traps (handy!).

I advise using the submarine/startrek style klaxon warning!

Do you have the latest speed cam database? Mine seems accurate enough. I have the individual databases, so it tells me if its a mobile (possibly there) or a fixed. It seems fairly good around the south of the UK.

Finally got my security strap.... Confused

Not entirely convinced....guess it's nice of the TomTom ppl to offer this free strap to anyone who didn't get one originally, but now seeing it, I'm not really convinced it's the answer to my concerns that my Rider could fall off the bike with some sort of accidental knock to the plastic clasp, or the tomtom rider.

I now have to deal with an extra dangly bit flapping around with a metal clasp attached to it...

Would be nicer to see some sort of inovative design which would ensure that there is no way that the securing clasp can be accidentally knocked open in the first place. Think also in any sort of light fall, the clasp would just spring open, letting go of the 'rider'.

My bike is not the most vibration free, (Buell) and watching the 'Rider' vibrating around...while I'm riding..I can't help but think that it could fall off Sad

Does anybody else have concerns or am i just being paranoid?

No I totally agree. It takes some of the fun out of riding! It just doesn't look secure. I am actually more distracted with looking at it out of fear of it falling off than I am by looking for directions!

Im confused, are your Riders wobbling around that much? Mine doesn't move at all no matter what I do. It appears to be rock solid!

Not that the device wobbles in the bracket...but believe me it does shake around with the vibrations from a Buell!...
I think, for me it is where the 'Rider' is mounted which concerns me. I had a GSXR600 before my Buell, and it was also mounted the only way it could be, which was on the Throttle side handlebar, Which I felt was not the ideal place, but was the only feasable place...or I could have used the bracket and used the double sided tape to stick it to the tank...which I felt was even more insecure! Being in a very vulnerable position, I fear that it would only take an acidental knock to the clasp, or the tomtom device, which could free it from the mounting bracket.

If it were more centralised...ie it mounted to the centre of the top yoke..(Somehow??..and not using double sided taped mounting bracket).. It is less vulnerable to be in the way, and less likely to be knocked..

Well like you suggested I've always had my Rider mounted centrally. Unfortunately the mount that TomTom provided was too big so I used self amalgamating tape to thicken up the bar. So far the mount has not moved or come lose over the 4000 or so miles since its been fitted that way

Although my FZR may not vibrate as much as your Buell I still don’t think the Rider will fall out.

I have had a low speed off on my bike with the Rider connected. I have to say the bike hit the ground fairly hard but the Rider still remained firmly in place.

1/ does Tom Tom Rider cover europe maps

yes

2/ can i connect it into my Intaride system

Maybe... the TomTom Rider doesn't have an audio output, it uses a bluetooth headset. if Intaride provide a bluetooth audio input then it's possible (although unlikely)

3/ can it reroute if you stray

they all do that (well, most of them)

I have the garmin Quest 2 which, with the Touratech cradle and RAM mount, is powered by the bike, and routes the audio into my Autocom. I suspect that would also allow you to plug into your Intaride.

Doesn't have to be a Bluetooth input. If the pins fit you just plug the bluetooth into the unit. I can do that with my Starcom.

For all of you having problems mounting the Rider to your sports bike here is what I have done.

I bought a TECHMOUNT from the US. Visit the link and you can search by motor bike for one that will fit. It's a little pricey but well worth the money to have the rider mounted in a decent place and very securely. The mount is also very well made. The plate that comes with the mount doesn't fit the Rider - the holes are in the wrong place. I used a pillar drill to drill some new ones in the right place although there are other mounting plates available for extra.

Here are the pictures

£250 Halfords, getting more realistic now, might have to take the plunge

Have bought the Rider off Ebay less than £250, also saw it advertised at Staples for £250 this morning. Works fine on the bike, but the earphone set up when used on 4 wheels is a pain. Does anyone use the over ear bluetooth headset with the rider and if so what make? as the one I have is "seen but can't link to the rider"

Cheers Very Happy

I've lost my bluetooth thingie and need to replace it. Not very easy, as that's just about the only thing you can't buy on the TomTom site! Evil or Very Mad

On all their links, only two showed it in stock at about £50.

As it was rubbish anyway (most of the time my Rider "couldn't find it" or it was "disconnected"), are there any alternatives?

It can be a bit hit and miss the headphone thing. I've found it works better and stays connected if you switch the headphone bit on first then the actual tomtom unit.

Does the GPS display what kind of speedcamera it's alerting you to?
the garmin displays a different icon depending if it's a redlight camera, static gatso/truvelo, or a mobile trap. the mobile traps often cause false positives, as there's rarely a car/van waiting there. It could be these that you're being alerted to, and not that the database is incorrect

pocketGPSworld have downloads for cameras:

£2 for one month, £19 for a year's subscription.

The subs means you get updates as and when they are made.

I wouldn't be surprised if your CD isn't just a copy of their databases

I think you may be able to get it to differentiate between them. I'm not sure. I just selected to warn me of all cameras. Some of them were clearly potential speed traps as there would be one of those police lay-bys nearby.
