Does anyone know whats involved with the above? Is it simply a case of ripping out anything that isn't needed from under the alternator cover and the relevent wiring?

Would it mean you can do away with the regulator/rectifier or does this need to stay in the circuit for some reason?

And yes, I do know it may well be a pain in the arse with no charging system, but unless you try for yourself Very Happy

Cheers for any help.

I think you can do without it but you will not get far because your battery
will just go flat.So realy you need all that or it will only go for 10 to 20
minutes.

Educated guess:

rip out all the stator coils. rip out the big heavy flywheel* that turns the magnets for the stator. rip out the regulator. run your ignitor gubbins off a battery that you charge off the bike and keep a couple of batteries spare. A good battery will run your ignition long enough for what you need. In theory, that's all. If you look at battery specs, one of the figures is how low long it will run an average ignition without any charging, and it's usually plenty long enough.

Loosing the flywheel means you need to keep the thing on top beans all the time, but that's not a problem for what you want it for Smile

As long as you don't want to start the bike off the battery, you'll probably get away with a much smaller and lighter battery than standard as well.

* you'll need a lightened flywheel otherwise it'll probably be too mad.

What are you trying to do because i once ran a bike on an everyready
battery when i worked in a garage and no one would take my word and
they had to see the battery that was in the bike. Shocked

Your going to need to know how much it takes out of the battery on a lap
and find something that will use the same power to see how a battery
will last. if you find something that uses less just add in things lke bulbs
or whatever so you can check what rate the power goes down.
But you will really need to know that it will get you to the line.

Good lad and i will help if i can just pm me.

Great cheers.

So just to confirm, I can rip out the regulator as this just controls the ac current coming from the alternator, charging the battery with dv and stops it frying once full?

They are a known fualt on the nc30's so getting it out would be handy Smile

Can modifying the old flywheel be done or is it a precise science with regards even weight distribution? I'm thinking it could be expensive to buy:lol:

As I mentioned before, I suspect it's not a case of 'being' mad with no fly wheel, but bad things happening to the engine. Don't have any direct experience of this, just a feeling.

You will have to be pretty precise machining it - it's not a case of getting out the angle grinder and taking a bit off!
Best to talk to a proper machine shop that deals with bikes.

You do occasionaly see lightened fly wheels come up on ebay quite cheap.

Yes, you can simply remove the regulator and associated wiring, the battery will then go flat as you run the bike. Now sober, I can remember that the battery rating you are looking for is the "reserve capacity" (RC) which will give you an idea how long it will run the bike for you without any charging input. Don't forget to factor in starting the bike - unless you rip the starter motor out as well Smile

Hi

Not 100% sure on the NC30, but the ignition probably works off it as well. Cutting it down would be possible, just make sure you cut the right bit down. The bike will rev more quickly and stall far more easily.

The regulator / rectifier unit take the high voltage AC and converts it to DC (the rectifier bit) of nominally 12V (the regulator bit). You should be able to remove it but might have run with the wiring afterwards.

You might find that you save rather more keeping the charging system and using a far smaller battery.

All the best

Keith

Here's a copy of my new wiring, would taking out the red/white cable from the rectifier be ok? The ignition will then run drectly from the battery?

Great, many thanks. Should get a few bob for my old rectifier too Thumbs Up

Maybe I'll start practicing my jump starts ready for next year to save battery power Very Happy
