Hi,

Got a cross head screw here connecting my airbox to the bike frame.

When I went to take it off, it just rounded straight away, good old Suzuki Cheese.

I only have sockets, spanners, a screwdriver.

Any way I can get the fucker off?

1 - find a socket slightly smaller than the screw head, hammer it on, try and remove it that way

2- drill out the screw till the head falls off, remove the airbox, then use pliers to remove the rest of the screww

3 - use a hacksaw to cut new grooves in the screw head, and try the screwdriver again

4 - put the screwdriver at an angle to the edge of the screw, and use a hammer to hit the screwdriver to push the screw round( not sure if ive explained this one very well)

sure theres other ways

At the moment option 4 seems the only viable option.

Would you believe it, I dont even have a hammer.

Can't hacksaw, theres not enough space and I only have a pen knife saw Sad

Cheers,

The socket idea is usually the best option, if it has a domed head and isn't countersunk obviously.

You need to use a proper hammer.

There's no way you'll be able to get a socket of the right size to undo the bolt on with anything less than a big hammer!

If i remember correctly arent the airbox screws the rounded head ones? in which case if you dont have a hammer, use something heavy and bash a screwdriver in making a grove... or drill it out ....

Well the flat bladed screwdriver surrendered to my repeated hammering and drove itself into the handle.

Cheap shit.

You get what you pay for with tools, if a crosshead driver is used in a posidrive screw chances are it will round it off and vice a versa. Most good quality screwdrivers have the metal shaft that goes to the top of the handle, not designed to be hammered but it works sometimes.

It would be worth investing in a good quality tool set before destroying...i mean working on the bike. Mr. Green

You need more tools, cannae do the job with what you have. Even a pair of pliers.

If you had pliers you could just rive the airbox off over the head of the screw, undo the screw with your pliers then refit it using a washer to cover the now slightly larger hole in the airbox. Bodgery at its worst but hey..

Why do you need to take the airbox off anyway?

Can you not just pop the rubbers off or fold them back? Might need to heat them up a little first.
