The founders talking bout the sale, complete with $1.65 billion smirks.
Siggi, just because someone has done well in life doesn't mean they're scum. |

Google will do what they can to keep as much of YT's content as possible, simply because without it the site is doomed to fail and YT is worth nothing without it's userbase.
But equally they are going to have to make some pretty substantial efforts with copyright infringing content to insure they don't just become the target of lawsuit after lawsuit.
Stuck between a rock and a hard place imo. ____________________ Photos and that |

Google will have to be very careful they don't alienate the millions of people that currently use Youtube or they'll just desert in their droves as stated above, just like people stopped using Napster when they started turning the screws. Interesting article on the BBC website today;
https://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/6038116.stm
Whatever happens, there'll be other firms along to fill any gap . I just don't see the business case in paying that much money for what could easily turn out to be a "here today, gone tomorrow" name. All they've paid for is users' goodwill, which has to be fickle at best for a web hosting site. ____________________ 2005 Yam Fazer (FZ6-S) |

I think it's pretty obvious why people in google would leverage the cash to buy YouTube too, but my reasons are a little different.
Google make their profit on an advertising model. They might make a few pennies here and there through other means but at the end of the day their stockholders are happy cause the adsense/adwords combo pays off big time.
Google will be well aware of the growing trend towards on-demand media as opposed to scheduled programs which aren't shown at people's convenience. The internet's going to be the driving force when it comes to 'what you want, when you want' media and currently YouTube's the market leader when it comes to video.
If G can make deals with the various producers & copyright holders then there's the possibility of YT becoming the first mainstream source for full TV & movie downloads, which are likely to have a fair bit of demand on a pay-per-play/subscription basis. Not to mention the fact that their ads will be appearing on the most popular streaming video site in existence.
It's not going to be an easy job but there is a massive amount of potential in YT. And if Google don't manage to pull it off? Well their stock went up by more than 1.6 billion after the buyout was announced anyway, so it would be no great disaster.
FWIW I cannot understand the $1.6 billion valuation though. Seems very 'Bubble 2.0'. ____________________ Photos and that |

"There is no revenue in page-peripheral marketing" - That is absolute bollocks. I don't believe YT could be paid for solely by text ads, but they would bring in millions, I can promise you that.
And there's never been a mainstream subscription service offering TV series and movies, certainly nothing with the presence of YouTube. One of YouTube's greatest achievements is it's mass appeal and ease of use. My dad has a YouTube account fer chrissakes. If they managed to achieve a deal with the movie producers and TV companies then I have no doubt that there would be demand for that content presented in a manner that anyone can use. If the prices were right it could be hugely successful.
But yeah, you're right it couldn't be a considered business decision; greed and corruption is the only logical explanation. ____________________ Photos and that |

Having shares in Google is valuable regardless of what anyone might think of their morals. So you can't sell them for a few years, thats not too bad as they'll be worth lots more then, Google share prices increased 1.1% on the day they bought youtube so I doubt other share holders were too bothered.
Conmen, fraudsters and charlatans... you'd get on well with them then. |
