Hey all, I had a go on a friends CCM ...740cc? supermoto. Was a lot of fun but only went up and down the road, not to mention it got nicked and dropped the other week so hole in the exhaust = not good.

We had a ride out for a little while and it looked a hell of a lot of fun.

What are they like? Price wise (for an older one), how do they feel to ride? Are they an anywhere near sensible choice for an all year round going from place to place mostly short distances but the odd 400 mile round trip.

Comfortable?

etc.

still trying to work out what to do when I've sold the RS.

vibey engines, fuel tanks are too small, run out of puff on the open road. If you're daily commute is through a major town then would be an absolute riot though.

Scrote magnets. They will come from MILES around to steal one, you will need to be able to watch it pretty much 24/7 and have some damn good security to stand a chance of keeping it.

Sad but true. Sad Ask Stinkwheel.......

Not to mention CCMs fall apart faster than a chocolate teapot. Not a good year round commuting bike Confused

Why not look at "street moto's" like a water down supermoto. Like the KTM Superduke, Yamaha XT660 X etc.

why not look on the ccm owners website, i have a 644 R30 and although it aint that powerful its a good crack, service intervals are every 3k and its nerver let me down ... apart from running out of petrol.

I'd say there great for short distance riding but 400 miles would be well uncomfortable on your bum and you'd have to fill up a few times Thumbs Up

I absolutly love them. Ive seen many of them keep up and beat a lot of much bigger sportsbikes on the twistys.

I thought most of the CCMs were in this category as well or at least half way there - they're not exactly light.

I've seen an old CB250s keep up with sports bikes - 99% of the time it's in the riders that are the major factor, not the bike.

Pros:
The lack of power means you have to work harder for the same speed on a sports bikes.

Restricted top speed - less likely to lose your licence from speeding.

High centre of gravity with very low gearing means it's more likely to wheelie in low gears.

Very 'flickable'.

Narrow and high, so good for getting between traffic.

Cons
The lack of power means you have to work harder for the same speed on a sports bikes.

High centre of gravity with very low gearing means it's more likely to wheelie in low gears - more likely to lose your licence from wheelies.

Can be unstable.

Expensive.

Uncomfortable seat for distance.

Poor riding position for distance.

If you want one with good performance, it will probably have very short service intervals.

Personally, I think most bikes sold as supermotos are overpriced and under specced compared to the opposition. There's lots of cheap bikes that can do pretty much what a supermoto can do on the road and more with only slight tweaks for a lot less money.

They are fun, but somewhat limited.
Don't buy one if you have any fillings in your teeth as they will be shaken loose by the vibes.

Had a Husaberg 470 for a bit and whilst it was good for wheelies and stoppies I found that it quickly became boring.
As for them being better on twisties than a sportsbike I think you would have to be talking motard track twisties covered in mud. They aren't as quick as what people say they are.
Putting motorcross wheels back on and taking it offroading is an option but I found that it was far too powerful to have much fun on.
I really do think that you need to be into the offroading thing to get any real enjoyment out of one.

Husabergs can be had for around the £1500 mark. I'd only buy one for a fun commute, learn how to stunt, or to go to a supermoto track. I doubt they're much fun for long rides. What's the point in taking an offroad bike and riding it on the road? Tart value, that's all.

It's like putting road tyres on a landrover, then comparing it to a lotus (well, not quite, but you get the point). Unless you're heavily swayed by the tartiness of a supermoto, or you'll actually make use of the wheelie/stoppie capability or the flickability then there's probably a better bike out there...

I like Supermotos purely for the fact that I reckon I would get a rush from stunting rather than going fast. And I think some of them look really mean Thumbs Up

well the CCM was surprisingly quick on the acceleration, but I can see the problems with them. Only really a considered option due to me being 6'4/5 and fairly well built

thats what they are. if i was in a position to have 2 bikes a supermoto would be one. from the limited experience i have of riding them they turn from left to right and back so quick. grip as well as the best bike i've ridden and beg to be thrashed. ive never had so much fun (at legal ish speeds) only after 50 miles i was thinking i'd sacrifice a bit of the quick steering and the single minded aggressiveness to be on my bandit. after 100 miles i hated it. after a quick spin on the bandit i wanted a supermoto, after a long day on the bandit i swore i'd keep it forever............

While you won't quite get the bandit weight down, you can sharpen up the steering a bit I'm sure by playing with the geomtry and suspesnion/tyres. Stick some wider bars (if you haven't already) on and you may be suprised how much of a difference just that makes with out a high CoG and losing 33% of the weight.

GearboxGeezer:
You can stunt many bikes. Supermotos generally don't make the best stunt bikes due to their dimensions (not bad, but not the best).

They really should be a second bike. As said, they aren't practical for reliable travel, but are immense fun. If it's your only bike, then no. If it isn't then go for it!
