a while ago, some people on here bidded on a friends item to bump up the price.

Recently i have lost two auctions, and then had ppl come back to me offering me the item for the price i had bid.

On first occasion it was apparently because the winning bidder didnt pay up, and on the second occasion it was the winning bidder finding that the item didnt fit them and offering it to me rather than relisting.

Or was it?

Maybe sellers often bid on their own stuff to raise prices.

Any thoughts on this ?

anyone wanna confess to doing it ? poll is anonymous

I don't, but I know of people who do, and I think its out of order, especially when you're usually talking a couple of quid, although I can see why someone might do it..

Have done, but rarely in the final stages of the auction.

Only done in earlier when I'm sure the price is going up a bit higher, to get people wanting to try and bid more than that.

Only once have I actually ended up winning it myself - and in that case no one else bid - put a bid on in the hope of 'getting the auction going'.

If someone came back to me offering it to me for my highest bid, I'd be tempted to offer them halfway between my highest and the next one below.

When bidding, I use sniping software, to ensure that people don't play with /my/ bids in such a manner to see how high I'm prepared to go and hope I out bid them again if it does go past my max bid.

I believe the correct term is 'shill bidding'.

I normally get it bump started by getting a starting bid in or if serious lack of interest but not in final stages.

only sometimes on reserve auctions or for auctions where I cant put a low reserve. eg I want £30 for an item and now you need a reserve of at least £50.

I use the wifes ebay. I wont do it on most items, but my mate bidded the r6 up a little.

Somtimes you can tell as the bidders are all very low feedback or the local is simular.

I don't, I list my items starting at a price I'm willing to let them go for - anything else is gravy. Have been tempted to bid on my own items with one of my other accounts to find out what a bidder is willing to go to, then cancel the bid and use a third account to bid just under the other person's maximum.

Not often but when i sell something that is quite rare, something that will only sell for the right price if someone is looking for one at the right time. If it's worth say £300 but it's stuck at £100 and there isn't much interest i'll leave it untill the last few mins then bid on it and win it myself. I'd rather lose a few quid in listing and final value fees then a couple of hundred selling something for peanuts.

It's like a real life auction Thumbs Up

Peope selling the thing in question often send someone to up the price.

It's not necessarily dodgy though. I recently had an auction where some bloody Canadian won and then wanted me to ship it to Africa (yeah right!), so I gave the next bidder a second chance offer, which he took. He could have thought I was bidding against myself, but I wasn't and it was above board.

yeah i think its quite possible that my examples are innocent too but it makes me wonder about all the times there was a battle between me and one other bidder

i might start looking at feedbacks of other bidders

One reason to only bid at the end. Stops sellers pushing your price up.

Doesn't mean much though, when I've done it, it's been a friend with lots of feedback.

Only time I'd consider using a non-account is if I wasn't sure if the biddging would go that high and effectively wanted a 'reserve' without using the syste.

As Silver said, bidding right at the end helps ensure ebay works realistically.

yeah but now im working, its not always something i can do, as i dont have internet at work, so looking at feedback is better than nothing

also to be honest i often forget my appointment with the end time

what is this sniping software you use ? is it free ?

It is free, it's called Bid-O-Matic.
Never let me down so far.

Unlike some, it runs on your own PC. This does mean you have to have an internet connection up and your PC on, of course. However I find it much better than online ones.

If you suspect a seller is bidding things up there is some way you can see someones bidding history. Not just what they've bought/sold but everything they've bid on.

You'll often find that it works both ways, account 2 bids up account 1's items and in return account 1 bids up account 2's items so it's fairly easy to spot.

come to think of it though, late bidding doesnt eliminate the problem

for example

seller has item on for £20 starting price

im the only person who wants it and am willing to pay £30 to get it

if sellers mate puts max bid in of £1000 pounds, and i bid £30 at the last minute, i will just lose out and sellers mate will it at £31 or whatever

sellers mate then offers is me for £30, or seller says that sellers mate refused to make payment

result is they get as much as i am willing to pay for it rather than as much as anyone else would be willing to pay for it.

in a fair auction i would have got it for what the seller was willing to let it go for and with no other real bidders, it may well have been considerably less than what i was willing to pay

im thinking of turning to the darkside myself and doing it too, although fortunately i have nothing i want to sell at the moment

i will try that sniping software tho

Yes. . . . When i was selling an exhaust that didnt fit my bike, i purchased it for 60 pounds and i bumped the price up to that so i didnt lose out, it ended for 80 anyway.

It doesn't prevent your problem.

But then people doing it in a way that has happened to you are putting themselves in the best situations - they have to pay ebay fees or go through a load of hassle. Also you are put in the position of power - you can offer an amount of money more than anyone else has bid, but less than your total bid.

If they don't take the offer, they lose out generally.
