Hi,
I have a 1991 zzr 250 that initially blew a headlamp, when i changed it turned ignition on to check it was ok, and as soon as i flicked the headlight switch on all power on the bike (ignition, lights, etc.) cut out. After finding a short in rear taillights, power was back on, jumped on to start it, ran for about 5 seconds and all power cut out again. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Check the fuse would be the obvious answer. The fuse is deliberately located as near to the battery as possible so that any shorts on the bike (e.g. in the taillight) will be of the fused supply. So it's possible that if your short didn't actually blow the fuse, it made it very tired indeed.

as above, check your battery connections, but if theres nothing obvious get your reg rectifier and charging system checked out, had similar problems on an old gs suzuki when the reg rectifier went. The bike would run if the battery was fully charged but when it started to drain it would cut out.

thanks to both of you for your quick replies, i got it working!!
I changed the fuses for the sake of it, just in case, then a mate suggested i clean the ignition switch with contact cleaner. Did it this morning, started straight away after that. I am still a bit suspect of it though so i will check the regulator anyway. Thanks again, at least it is working for now.

I reckon that's a good call by your mate - an intermittent connection in there would go a long way towards explaining all the problems you've had.
