Stink usually knows why you'd do something in a specific way... why would you shoulder check to the right when turning left? |

It's what I was taught when I did my test. My instructor taught me so I remembered it. I can still hear his voice in my helmet "Mirror, mirror, headcheck right. Indicate, lifesaver, manouver. Lifesaver, turn.".
It's what they wanted, so it's what I did.
I still do it sometimes because the mirrors on a GPZ are pish and some of my bikes don't have mirrors. An observation to the left only doesn't let you see everything.
Suppose for example, someone was overtaking and in your blind spot as you were about to turn left. You do your observation left and when you look forwards again, there is a dirty great volvo estate cutting back in in front of you (and knowing volvo drivers, suddenly braking and deciding the want to turn left into the same junction you are heading for, or hitting the brakes because they dropped their mobile phone). |

The advisor from the DSA said either way is ok, non is better than the other. The examiner just wants to see you make observations especially the lifesavers and show that you are safe. |

Passed my test yesterday doing the left look only thing and got a clean sheet.
What a great feeling to have it out of the way.
I asked the examiner about looking right first when turning left and he said it was a good thing to do that, but he could see me using my mirrors a lot before using my left lifesavers and that was fine.
I wish I could afford a bike now, but after spending £750 after a retest, I can't even afford a helmet.
It still feels great though.

ouch £750!!. dont worry mate, I wasted (well not quite wasted. I learned to ride with gears under supervison so it was helpful) £675 and I didnt get a licence at the end. 5 day DAS that was..
onto topic though..
I cant understand why people wouldnt do a quick check over the right. I never felt "safe" just checking the mirrors. Granted the chances of something even being in your blindspot is slim but ONE DAY something could hit you from your blindspot, like a car or even a bike thats accelerated to overtake and suddenly pulls back into the lane, for example and you would've even have the chance to react to the situation..
just my opinion and the way I ride since ive had to adjust to not having mirrors. It wasnt the way I was taught either but it makes me feel that bit safer ____________________ 04' DT125RE (run-a-bout) // 89' DT125R (rebuilt + supermoto conversion)
