Hi,

New to the forum and have a question.
My instructor say's when turning left this is the procedure.

Look over left shoulder, signal if clear and move into position.

I was talking to another instructor today and he said this...

Look over right shoulder, then left shoulder then signal and move into position.

What is the correct way or are either ok?

Cheers everyone.

Mirror check, signal, lifesaver to left. Then move into position.

Thats it,

Baz.

As I recall:

Check both mirrors.

Quick Headcheck right (glance over right shoulder).

Left indicator on.

Lifesaver left, immediately before you adjust road positioning to turn left.

Second Lifesaver left, immediately before you make the turn.

You ALWAYS do a lifesaver in the direction you are going to move just before you do it.

Rang the DSA today and was told the left observations only on a left turn are fine as you are moving to the left, so a right look isn't required.

Cheers

Stink usually knows why you'd do something in a specific way... why would you shoulder check to the right when turning left? Confused

I got told to do the right check also... Still look both ways whichever way I'm turning, obviously with the relevant lifesaver last. Never trust your mirrors, especially on a bike.

Becomes second nature after a while!

It's what I was taught when I did my test. My instructor taught me so I remembered it. I can still hear his voice in my helmet "Mirror, mirror, headcheck right. Indicate, lifesaver, manouver. Lifesaver, turn.".

It's what they wanted, so it's what I did.

I still do it sometimes because the mirrors on a GPZ are pish and some of my bikes don't have mirrors. An observation to the left only doesn't let you see everything.

Suppose for example, someone was overtaking and in your blind spot as you were about to turn left. You do your observation left and when you look forwards again, there is a dirty great volvo estate cutting back in in front of you (and knowing volvo drivers, suddenly braking and deciding the want to turn left into the same junction you are heading for, or hitting the brakes because they dropped their mobile phone).

The only thing I remember was MSPSL.

Mirrors - check both, and check your blind spots.
Signal - Put it on.
Positioning - Move to the left of the road (if turning left).
Speed - Prepare for the corner.
Lifesaver - Check your shoulder before you turn, it should be the LAST thing you do before you commit.

My instructor really hammered that home, and I came back with only 4 minors on the test (but we won't go into that).

The advisor from the DSA said either way is ok, non is better than the other. The examiner just wants to see you make observations especially the lifesavers and show that you are safe. Thumbs Up

life saver right, then left (mirror check for people who have them. I dont)
indicate
life saver right, then left
position
adjust speed
last life saver right then left (looking out for cyclists)
take the turning

thats my way anyway. I hardly used my mirrors when I was learning on my scoot as I didnt feel I could rely on them so I just replace mirror checks with life savers. I mean if your doing a mirror check then a blind spot check you might aswell have done a life saver and seen everything in one go.

It's something to stop you drowning...
https://www.voicenet.com/support/lifesaver.jpg

In bike terms it's a good look over the shoulder to make sure you're not about to be mown down by another vehicle (i.e. something which might just save your life).

I found it here.

The 'lifesaver' glance

This is a last check over the shoulder into the blind spot to make sure nothing unexpected is happening just behind you.

In heavy traffic it's usually essential, especially when turning right into a minor road, but during high speed overtaking, when you are certain what is happening behind, it's often safer to concentrate on what is happening ahead.

Passed my test yesterday doing the left look only thing and got a clean sheet.
What a great feeling to have it out of the way.

I asked the examiner about looking right first when turning left and he said it was a good thing to do that, but he could see me using my mirrors a lot before using my left lifesavers and that was fine.

I wish I could afford a bike now, but after spending £750 after a retest, I can't even afford a helmet.
It still feels great though.

Cheers Very Happy

ouch £750!!. dont worry mate, I wasted (well not quite wasted. I learned to ride with gears under supervison so it was helpful) £675 and I didnt get a licence at the end. 5 day DAS that was..

onto topic though..

I cant understand why people wouldnt do a quick check over the right. I never felt "safe" just checking the mirrors. Granted the chances of something even being in your blindspot is slim but ONE DAY something could hit you from your blindspot, like a car or even a bike thats accelerated to overtake and suddenly pulls back into the lane, for example and you would've even have the chance to react to the situation..

just my opinion and the way I ride since ive had to adjust to not having mirrors. It wasnt the way I was taught either but it makes me feel that bit safer Smile
