Well I bought a VFR400 last week to get ready for when I pass my test, I was looking for a bike that had no tax or test and that needed a bit of work, mainly because I like playing with stuff and if I got a mint bike I'd break it before I could ride it!

Anyhoo, the bloke said it needed fork seals for a test (which were included with the bike) and the fairings had a few broken tabs and weren't on the bike, other than that it seemed all good, did a HPI, came back clear, great!

Until I got it home! I fired it up and went to ride down my yard an it just cut out and wouldn't fire again (I did see it running before I bought it) so pushed it up the shed, it seemed to be a lot heavier to push than I expected too

But to cut a long story short(ish), some monkey had had the carbs off at some point and broke a bit off which wouldn't have helped and the vaccumn pipe that goes to the fuel tap was off, so I bodged the hole in the carb and put the pipe back on the fuel tap, all good!

Now for the fork seals, balance the bike on axle stands and remove front wheel - AH! thats why it was hard to push, one of the front brakes were sticking! Get the forks off and the spring in the first one seems stiff trying to get it out so try the other, even worse, look down the forks, seem a bit iffy, get a straight edge on them to find out they are bent!

Next, go right through the bike, no other damage so not too bad! A quick hunt on ebay turns up some forks and carbs which I'm now picking up tomorrow!

So far I've sorted the sticking brakes (back one was a bit sticky as well) and swore lots! I'm now left with a bike in the middle of the shed on axle stands and my dad complaining that he cant get in the shed to do anything! (its more like a work shop than a shed!)

Hopefuly I'll have it back together tomorrow night so I can move it to one side while I do the rest of the work

I was sort of expecting to have to do more than just fork seals for what I paid for it, I still feel I've got a good deal (just not as good a deal as it seemed at first!)

Pics to follow - lovely purple and black paint! Rolling Eyes

I'll keep you all up to date on how I get on with it!

Well here's a couple of pics with some of the new plastics that I picked up tonight, I still have the purple and black fairings but they could do with some work!

Its getting painted anyway, think I'm gonna go for blue with white decals

Shame about the garage Laughing

Bit hrd to see what the bikes really like in a confined dark space, but it looks like you may have a few hours work ahead of you to get it road worthy again.

And yes its purple Shocked Sick

It won't be purple for too long! (although my other half is telling me not to paint it Rolling Eyes )

Just need another couple of bits - caliper carrier, disks and a coolant pipe, then get it painted and stick it all back together to gather dust until I get my test passed!

Got the new carbs on today, sorted a water leak and changed the temp gauge sender

The carbs I put on had a sticky float so had to take them off and clean them up, should have done that before I put them on really!

After my lesson tomorrow I'm gonna start rubbing the plastics down ready for painting, has anyone tried the electric spray guns from halfords? I've heard they can be better than using a compressor because they are quieter and you get less bounce back from the paint because it comes out slower, is this right?

Thanks
Rob

Fianly tracked down a caliper bracket for the bike, that and the disks should be here soon so I should be able to take it for a test ride shortly to make sure everything is ok

I didn't get round to sanding the fairings, I'm still trying to get the glue off from the stickers that were on!

Theres an nc24 fairly local for sale, its fairly rough tho, but I'm thinking about getting it if I can get it cheap enough to use bits on my bike and use the rest of it to make a trike (2 wheels at the front) for a bit of off road fun!
