I have just bought a 1990 G reg honda nsr in red/white marlboro colours, and was curious if there was any particular weak points of them or if any thing was notorious to go wrong? any feedback would be great!

are you sure it isn't an NS125R rather than an NSR125?

The NS125R has a square headlight and has NSR written on the side believe it or not. Athlough Marlboro colours don't sound standard to me.

I think the early NSR125's had twin round headlights, but don't quote me.

Either way they are good bikes I'd say.

Id check that the oil pump is working correctly and the coolant is fine,

if it doesnt have an mot, also check the brakes suspension tyres chain sprokets, also just go through all the oils to make sure their good,

if thats all fine make sure theres enough 2 stroke oil in there and it should be fine.

I have to agree with Marjay, I think that is an NS125R, the NSR of that age had the alcast frame and twin round headlights, also had a plastics that covered petrol tank and went right back to the rear in light in a single piece.

As for things that go wrong, it is a 2 stroke for a start, so the cylinder/piston/rings will need replacing at reasonably regular intervals. As was mentioned, check the oil pump and keep the tank filled up. Check the power valve cable adjustment (can make quite a big difference in the performance, assuming that the NS has a power valve!)

well, this is what the was put on the listing:
Quote:

''Honda NSR 125cc.

Honda NSR125, G reg 1990, Red Marlboro colours.
25812 miles
I've had this bike for over a year and now i've got my full licence i don't need it. The bike is very clean for it's year and runs well. It has a micron steel exhaust that sounds nice.
Every thing works lights, horn, brakes ect but the speedo cable has snapped and needs replacing (pennies.) the bike does not have a MOT and it probably could do with a service. Again easy for some one who no's how.
Theres no delivery service so if you wont it you will have to come and get it.
I hope that i've given enough info on the bike and you like the pictures. Cheers Happy Bidding''

dont EVER go into the shop and tell them it's an NSR it's NOT! tell them it's an NS125R

they're completely different bikes and barely share a resemblance.

I had mine for about 5 years mate and i bloody miss it, it was absolutely bulletproof and had a lot of torque even though the NS's don;t have a powervalve system.

I got bored of mine so threw away the fairings and replaced them with Mito objects.

bare in mind this is an old photo. the Rear seat unit was fitted a lot better under the tank later on

thats definately an NS125R, the bloke doesn't know what he's talking about.

I used to own one. They were built in spain and not as well put together as the NSR iirc.

However they are still pretty good bikes on the whole.

I still have mine, and yes, it is indeed bulletproof, it's very quick and sooo much fun.

Steve, run it on a good 2 stroke oil, it will appreciate it. Check rear wheel bearings for play, and also make sure all lights are working - my headlight bulb blows every other month.

There is a lot of mechanical difference. As said, they are basically different bikes.

Also, it's a fair trek to pick that up. I recently did a trip of similar distance and that was £90 in diesel and £50 for the van hire so you're looking at around £150 if you diy, a lot more for someone else to do it. I hope you factored this into the cost of buying it.

Your cheapest option is to sort the insurance before you go, get a cheap flight/train down then ride it back on A roads and duel carrigeways.

this is where the problem is: the guy says there is no tax or MOT, now so my dad's mate may help me pick it up..

and when i got it i realised the distance but hoped and preyed i could find cheap transport, which i could now have..

i would have loved to have a go at riding it back though,.....

I have it now, the logbook said NS125r-f but is still ok and sounds nice with the micron exhaust so i got it, plus i now a decent 125 to rally around on and not get the p*ss taken for it's looks....
had to stip it right down and re-build it for transportation, does anyone know where to a workshop manual from?

Lol at the above pic, the bike leans more on the sidestand that it does in that pic, hang off a bit more and you'll get your elbow down too! Laughing Laughing Laughing

Bought a new NS125F many many moons ago, was a great bike apart from the horrible exhaust note, it got nicked after 2 weeks so bought an RD125LC with the ins money!

I did have a video of it but can;t find it, it's basically a twist cordless screwdriver with the forward/reverse buttons extended to my handlebars, and the drill mounted vertically with plate attached[/img]

also, i have had a play with it today, it starts first kick, and sounds nice, front light works, but back light and indicators aren't wired back up yet, as we dis-mantled it for transport, plus the carb needs adjusting, how are the fairings for weaknesses?, plus are they expensive to replace, as it is an unfortunate eventuality local to me.unless you give more than you get which is not easy when there is 20+ in an average street 'crowd' who seem to think bikes are football-proof, and if it aint tied, bolted, anchored and alrmed down, it may very well be gone i a very short while if your not extremely careful so it is tricky but i am determined to have it for 2yrs+ for my test etc.. also how do you de-restrict them, i may consider it eventually! Laughing

also, what do you need to do to de-restrict them, and how long will the engine hold out after a modification like that?
