So I was going around on the Yamaha TZR 50 that I've been talking about, cause I took it to some mechanics who fixed it, and it's great.
Suddenly the bike stopped, as if I'd ran out of petrol. I know I have the entire reserve left, so I was like WTF... I push started it, and it worked. Went about 100m, and it stopped again. After a couple of repetitions I put it on the sidewalk, and push started again. When I have it in gear, with the clutch fully in, its perfect for about 5 seconds. Then the revs suddenly increase to about 6000/min, and go back down slowly, and the bike just stops... Ever heard of anything like it?

Yes, that sounds EXACTLY like it's running out of petrol. I think by moving the bike you're sloshing enough petrol into the carb to make it run for a few seconds more.

It's possible that with the tap on reserve, it's not actually allowing any fuel though, or the bit of petrol you have left is below the reserve outlet.

Rising-revs is a sign of mixture leaning-off. I reckon the reserve outlet in your petrol tap is blocked.

If that is the case, how would I unblock it? Do I have to take the petrol tank off?

Depends what is blocked. The suggestion of a blocked breather is a good one, although that would affect it whether it was on reserve or not.

Reserve just works by taking fuel from a lower point in the fuel tank. Also any rubbish in the tank will sink to the bottom, as will any water that gets into the tank. When you switch onto reserve any of this can get sucked into the carb. Also if rubbish is in the bottom of the tank then it will block the pickup for reserve.

All the best

Keith

A blocked breather might become more apparent as the weight of the fuel in the tank is reduced. Could be a blocked breather as it's only usually older tanks that get clogged-up reserve outlets.

All great suggestions on the thread, but first, just put some more petrol in Smile. Sometimes you'll find you can hear petrol sloshing around when it's on reserve, but there's just not enough to reach the reserve outlet. Common case is where the tank is 'bent' over the top frame tube and there's petrol in the right hand side and non in the left, where the outlet is. Lean your bike over, hey presto it works again.

If putting fuel in you still get the same proplem....Next time is cuts out open the tank up straight away, if it hisses you have a blocked breather. Wink

It helps if you have petrol!
I suggest that you put both fingers in your ears, turn around and say "RED" back-wards.
