PostPosted: 01:39 - 20 Oct 2006    Post subject: Camera help Reply with quote

I've been lurking for a while but decided it was time to make an account once I needed some help! Razz

Anyways straight to the point:
I basically want to get a bullet camera (link) and fit it to a digital video recorder (link). I also want to power both devices from my bike battery.
Now as the voltage isn't going to be all that steady and I don't want to wreck the camera/recorder, I'll be fitting a voltage regulator in between. I also need a potential divider to step down the voltage before it gets to the recorder as it only takes a 5v input.
Here's a diagram:
https://img286.imageshack.us/img286/3003/camerasetuptz8.png

Now, where I need the help:
Firstly is there anything obviously wrong with this? I've never done anything similar so any advice will be more than welcome.
Second, I'll be building the divider myself, and I'm a little confused as to where I connect the 0v rail to - the negative terminal of the battery would be the obvious choice - is this correct?

Any input is much appreciated, so thanks Smile

hey there you don't need a regulator,
the bikes battery is smooth enough,
the bullet camera is 12v and the video recorder you are looking at has a 12v to 5v transformer(for running in a car which can easily be made to fit onto the bike). all you have to do is hook up both to the battery(via an inline fuse)
heres a wee pic

Thanks for your help! The in-line fuse was a bit of a no-brainer, as I'd rather replace that than a few hundred quid's worth of kit!
Regarding the 12v to 5v transformer... whereabouts did you see that it 'has' one? And how would I go about fitting it to the bike? Obviously I haven't seen one so I don't even know what you mean - the only thing that springs to mind is the kind of thing you stick in a cigarette lighter.

Hi

The bullet camera I have is meant to be fairly free with the voltage it takes. From memory they claim it will easily take 8V to 15V. Worth checking with the supplier of your bullet camera.

All the best

@Kickstart - Thanks for the input, I'll check with my supplier and see what they say.

Anyone have anything to say regarding my second post?

Only 15fps though, not ideal but good for the price.

Yep, those are the things I thought you meant. According to a retailer the included AC/DC adapter has a 5v/2A output. Now whilst I can easily use the 4.5V as that will be fine, how well would it cope with a 1.5A input?

Cheers for your help, guys.

15fps output doesn't look good for bike stuff.

I've had problems using a bullet cam attached to a bike battery in the past.

it doesn't matter about the input as long as the output of the unit can handle it .

oh yeah? why what happened, are you better using the supplied battery pack??

I actually meant the recorder, but to be honest 2A going into that sort of device sounds a little high.

As regards the battery, I could quite easily stick a voltage regulator in as they only cost about a quid.

Thanks, I actually went into their Birmingham shop today and bought a few bits and pieces - the most important thing being a multimeter as I wanted to check the battery voltage. I did actually do a search, but none of the other topics really covered what I wanted to know.

I now see why G might have had problems - the battery voltage ranges from 8V to 14V - 8V when you hit the ignition and 14V once the alternator kicks in. There's only actually 12V across the terminals when the bike is idling, and that's not when you want your camera on!
As such I'm going to make a regulator to keep it at 12V, but I just thought I'd share with you guys in case anyone else decided to fit a camera with low voltage tolerances... beware!

you do not need to make a regulator maplins sells one already you can select the vlotage output you want from it by simply adjusting the switch to your needs, mine has several out puts on it

1. buy the lead which goes straight to the battery and give you the ciggi lighter socket on the other end

2. plug in the voltage regulator adaptor they sell and select the output you want

3. connect camera and other stuff

look here

https://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=42895&&source=14&doy=21m10

and here
https://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?TabID=1&DOY=21m10&ModuleNo=37423&criteria=

hope this helps

Thanks for the help dave - I'm going to give the regulator a shot for two reasons:
1) I can make the entire contraption small, space is a concern for me as I've already got an Autocom system under the seat, and
2) I love tinkering with electronics!

However as it will inevitably result in either mild electrocution or burnt-out components (likely both) I'll pick up a converter on Monday. Thanks! Very Happy

just watch out with the hard drive digital recorders as from experience with my Archos Av420 it can feck up and not record due to data getting corrupted by vibrations/bumps mostly.. i've bought a new harddrive (40gb) for it which has shock protection etc and should be better than the crappy one installed in the machine, haven't tried it on the bike yet though..

one with a memory card may be better, if possible.

Unfortunately I don't think I can really cope with just a memory card, especially as the cards themselves aren't cheap!
Thanks for the heads-up on the vibration issue though, it's something I hadn't thought of. I'll see what I can do about housing the device in a foam surround.
Hopefully I'll get under way with some of the electronics next week, and I'll be sure to let you all know how it goes!
