Bike not starting/no lights/possibly ignition - help reqd!!

Hi folks,

I have taken off my tank and airbox for the first time today to have a little look underneath and assess what I will need to service on the bike. I started it up with the airbox off and cleand the airfilter - so far so good everything works just fine!

Anyhoo, I have then put the bike back together and it wont start, in fact where everything was working just fine previously, firing up first time etc and the dash lights coming on I am getting nothing. Even when I arm my alarm usually I turn the key in the ignition and it sets off - not any more...

I tried to bump it off down the street and got nothing, usually it bumps off in 2rd pretty quickly but no such luck today. The battery is new (been on 2 weeks) and had a decent charge in it from yesterdays ride so I doubt it is that causing my problem.

Any of you able to offer and good advice here to fault fixing this?

Failing that, if any of you are in hillsborough, Sheffield and dont mind helping a new biker all help is appreciated

It must be a blown fuse.What bike is it.

zzr 600 e1 I have checked the junction box and all the fuses are ok there (then again there were only lights fuses)

if there are others to check it would be great to know where

Thanks Paddy, I have just been out to try it again, usually if it was a battery problem there would at least be a few seconds of lighting on the dash and headlights but it appears to have no effect turning the ignition. As I said previously the alarm is not even triggered (as if the ignition is not actually being turned to the start position)

I currently have the bike in bits out the back and would love to get it working again for tonight.

Could you have a bad earth or a knackered solanoid?

Hi

There is a main fuse in the starter relay. 30A I think. Follow the +'ve lead from the battery and it is the first thing that the lead goes to.

Folks, I have checked the main fuse which is intact and fine, I am just wondering where the solenoid may cause an issue with the electrics such as lights rather than actually starting the bike?? For now I am trying to diagnose why turning the ignition does nothing electrically (not even triggers my alarm which it normally would).

If after this stage it does not start I will diagnose that but with a brand new battery with full charge and having had the bike running not 1 hour before I am thinking the problem is happening BEFORE I am even getting to the starting system. I may be wrong though but logic tells me the problem is occuring within the ignition barrel or between that and the connection to the lights.

Hi

On Hondas the starter relay definatly can cause problems, and looking at the ZZR manual all the ciruits use power that has gone through the relay.

Batteries rarely go pop suddenly.

There is literally nothing else I have undone while taking off the airfilter, i have not undone any electrical connections (although since taking it apart again I have checked all of the connectors nearby to make sure I have not dislodged anything.

So far all I have done today is retrace what I have done and consult my workshop manual to no avail which is why I am looking to you guys for advice.

Added** The only think electrical I have fiddled with is I tightened up the negative connector on the battery as it was a little loose and I have spreayed WD40 into the ht leadswhen I popped them off to check the depth the spark plugs are at ( i only did this on 2 and 3 though s I didnt want to undo anything else)

Hi

Have you got a multimeter?

If so check the voltage over the battery. Check for a voltage going to the starter relay. Check for a voltage coming out of the relay (not the chunky wire to the starter motor, just the small wire, white I think).

Hi folks, thanks for all the help but it is now fixed. It turned out to be a corroded wire in the connector block. It has now been stripped off and attached and works fine again - simple fix eh after all that trauma!
