Hi,

I've just bought a NS125 (1987) and started to strip it down. The engine needs a rebuild as the previous owner melted the piston.

When I took the barrel of to inspect the damage I noticed it seems to have a steel liner in it. Someone on another forum said that the barrel is standard and needs plating and cannot be rebored but I'm not convinced.

I thought the plated barrels were solid alloy without a liner?

Can someone who knows have a look at the pics of the barrel and tell me for definite?

Hi
Looking at your photo's I say that yes your barrell is a cast iron lined one. You can see the different materials by the different colour and also the join line.

A nonliner or plated barrell would have the same aluminium colur right to the bore edge or the start of the plating.

Having a liner means your barrell can be rebored to the next bigger piston size if need be and if oversize pistons are available for it.

Have a reputable machine shop measure it up for you. If there is not any damage from the piston meltdown or too much wear, you may get away with having it honed and a new piston and rings of the same size.

cheers

^^Thanks.

also, you can't really see it in the pics but the ports on the barrel do not line up perfectly with some of the ports on the liner meaning there is a bit of a lip in places. Would this affect the running/performance at all?

I'm going to take it to a specialist and let them have a look but any other advise in the mean time would be appreciated.

Hi

Stock NS125 barrel is plated but that one looks like a liner has been bodged in.

Closest place to you is probably PJ Engineering in Wolverhampton.

All the best

Keith

You wouldn't recommend getting mine honed/rebored then?

I wasn't going to get it replated because of the steel liner, I was hoping just to get it rebored for now as the bike needs more things replacing than I anticipated.

I've seen athena replacement barrels (standard) for just under £100 then another £20 for a piston kit but I thought I could save a few quid if I could get away with a rebore.

i do not recommand big bore on this bike , like the NSR125R the max size admissible for the bottom-end is 150cc , otherwise you will change your engine very shortly

Do you think it would be ok to get mine rebored rather than buy a new barrel?

Its going to cost enough to rebuild the bottom end and the rest of the bike at the moment. As long as a rebore will last for a few 1000 miles I don't mind replacing the top end again at a later date.

Hi

I am not keen on the idea of putting cast iron liners into engines designed to be plated, you can probably get away with boring it out and fitting a new piston. A rebore will not be expensive, but not sure how easy it will be to source an oversize piston (certainly not from Honda).

All the best

Keith

Thanks, I've seen a few places that sell oversized pistons so I'm gonna take it somewhere and get it rebored for now.

You can get a 150cc kit for them no worries. This is a standard size for the bike in Thailand & they run them with no bottom end problems at all.

I've only seen 190cc kits, any ideas where I'd get a 150?
