I am a bike mad, but sadly car-driving student.
I do a fair amount of motorway miles between my home and my university (Colchester and Brighton), and I'm starting to see a disturbing pattern emerging among bikers.
I make a point of checking my mirrors 2 or 3 times before changing lanes, and fairly regularly while in slow traffic, so I'm usually fairly quick to spot filtering bikers. With a love of bikes, and a realistic view of traffic flow, I also always make a very delibrate point of getting out of the way, this behaviour encourages other car drivers to do the same, and also allows you lot to feel safe that I'm not going to side-swipe you.
However, in the last month (about 500 motorway miles, far too many in traffic) not one of you, and I mean seriously, not even one has waved or nodded a thankyou. Not even the slightest gesture.
Now I'll continue moving out of your way, but all of this probably not doing your public image too much good...
It's only a suggestion, but cheer the hell up! It's crappy for everyone, but you'll be through a long time before us! |

Being a younger rider (16) i was unsure when filtering, and usually never thanked anyone because i was far too busy concentrating (and usually people object to my filtering). However some kind bloke let me in thismorning so i gave him a nice thumbs up - its not that we're ignorant, we're just looking out for drivers who may not be as considerate or as willing to let us go ahead. ____________________ Will work for petrol

I give a wave when I can and when it's safe, but to be honest if I did it to every car that shifted over a bit I'd never have my hand on the bar.
Though the ones that quite obviously go out of their way will always get a wave, whenever possible.
You might find that as the season draws to a close, and the fair weather/weekend riders pack up for the winter, the wave ratio rises again. |

I always try to wave if its obvious that the driver has delibrately moved out of the way, other gestures if its obvious that they are blocking the way.
Its not always possible, for instance I might be travelling a bit too fast to want to take my hands off the bars, but I guess thats more likely with overtaking, not your true filtering. ____________________ https://www.metacafe.com/watch/1972097/how_to_behave_on_a_forum/ |

when i go out on my bike, and there is traffic on the ring road, i filter past it, see countless cars move over, and it not possible to keep riding your bike in a safe fashion and wave a sign of 'thanks' in each one's direction, but i do my best to thank as many as poss. The BIG bikes nod, although whether it is a car or another biker, it is not easy, your arm can even get achy! ____________________ Roger wrote: Women don't get damp for clingy puppies. I always chuckle when, on an already plenty wide enough road, a car goes to such an effort to move over that they practically swerve off the road and into a hedge! |

Unless I have something more pressing to worry about, I always wave with my left hand if people move over on the left hand side, and give them a nod if they move over to the right out of the way (on dual carriageways). I'll usually also give them a wave if I've rejoined the flowing traffic in front of them and they've left a sensible gap between us.
It never hurts to be polite, just don't sacrifice your own safety in doing so.
Sometimes they move over so vigorously, it makes me feel compelled to go past them, even when it's not entirely safe (I'm a lot better at ignoring cars moving over to let me past when it's dangerous now though). If I can't be arsed I just drop back far enough to make it obvious I'm not going to and they carry on.
As far as vehicles indicating goes, I never filter past something if it's indicating anything. For all I know, they indicated left and actually intend to turn right. ____________________ I must not be a troll...

Don't take this and the rest of the reply in the wrong way, but if you were that bike mad, you'd be on a bike, so you're just another cager.

Well, excuse the hell out of me. In the last month (about 1200 motorway miles) I've filtered past thousands of cars - if you think I'm going to give everyone a little just for staying out of my way, you'd better sit down because I've got some bad news for you...
| Dave McCool wrote: | Now I'll continue moving out of your way, but all of this probably not doing your public image too much good... |
Oh dear, here's some more bad news - I don't give a fuck about what you think of bikers. All you need do is concentrate on driving safely and staying out my way. In return, I won't take your wing mirror or toe-slide down your car. It's OK, you don't have to wave in return for this special consideration...
| Dave McCool wrote: | It's only a suggestion, but cheer the hell up! It's crappy for everyone, but you'll be through a long time before us! |
I don't have the time or inclination to "cheer up" when I'm filtering. I'm too busy tring to second-guess which brain-dead nonce is going to be next to try and kill me by switching lanes without indicating while he plays with his satnav/phone/knob/passenger/ipod.
So, "bike mad" Dave, come back when you're a biker and then offer me advice on what to do when filtering, and I promise I'll put your name forward to be nominated as BCF's Official Waver At Cars Whilst Filtering. How's that? ____________________ "That's it. You people have stood in my way long enough. I'm going to clown college."

It's easily explained, a worrying amount of bikers consider that they own the road, thus thanking (or acknowledging) you for making their journey easier isn't something they think necessary or even polite.
It's weird, plently of bikes would wave if I moved over a bit when I drove a Megane, yet now I drive a big 4x4 that takes up more of the road so it is helpful to move over giving more road space and visibility for filtering bikes, very few bikers wave/acknowledge when I move to help let them through. Ah well, tis easy to see why plently of people dislike bikers and don't give a fuck about them. |

OK, as to why I haven't got a bike, that's explained in the first line, STUDENT. Wouldn't have a car either if I hadn't been gifted this one by my grandad, and for the record I'm working my arse off to save up and get my bike licence sorted.
I'm not asking for everyone to thank every driver, pretty clearly that would be stupid, and if you actually bothered to read, you'd see I've already explained that.
As for threats to my car, seriously mate, get out more. If i suggested driving into any of you lot there'd be outrage, so leave that sort of stuff out...
You can claim you don't give a shit about what us cagers think about you, but at the same time if we all decided you were a bunch of useless tossers and not to do you any favours then your progress wouldn't be half as swift.
Seriously am surprised at the heated reactions to this, all it was was a point made based on the observations of someone with a different point of view to yourselves.
Some of you have reacted well, others are narrow-minded pricks. |

i like to wave when someone does move for me but as others have said sometimes its not practical. especially in peak hour traffic,
just know we do appriciate your moving over to let us through, even when we don't show it.

Feelin the luv in here boys.
Why is it that when someone has some input that others may not agree with, some feel the need to resort to personal attacks.
If you don't agree, then simply state that and move along.
You can express your differing point of view without turning it into a slinging match.
After all this is what a forum is about. People coming together with a common interest and sharing varied ideas and opinions.
While you may not agree with it, nor understand it the bottom line here is you have to accept it.
Dave as has already been explained there are a number of reasons why a rider can't acknowledge you assisting them filter through traffic and this may be something you are unaware of until you get your bike and experience it first hand.
I do agree that a little thanks can go along way though.
I feel similar frustration when I go into a service station and hold open a door for someone who is comin in behind me.
Only to have them walked right on passed like I'm not even there.
I dont do it for the thanks though, I do it because it makes me feel good. They can't take that away from me even if they are ignorant asses.
Well done mate for showing respect for other road users bikers or otherwise. There should be more of it.
You've never pulled over to let me pass but thanks anyway for those who you did do it for
