Hi all

gonna be chaging my rear sprocket this weekend for the first time, but i got a bit of a problem. The rear axle bolt is really tight.
I already tried to get the axle bolt off but couldnt manage to get it off with an adjustable spanner literally putting all my body weight behind it.
Will it be ok to cover it in WD40 / penetrating oil type stuff to help get if off (worried about getting it back on and jeeping it tight enough).
Also any other tips about how to get it off would be welcome.
Lastly when its done back up (i aint got a torque wrench yet Sad ) does it need to be this tight as i figure its gonna be a bit of a problem with the tools i got.

Cheers.

Gaz.

get a proper sized spanner on it (preferably a ring type) or a socket. adjustable spanners are not recommended as the jaws will give and likely round off the bolt head/nut.

AS ABOVE..

Some sprockets require NEW HARDWARE in refitting.

I never had any problems using a skoot of threadlock on good originals.

Make sure you clean off ALL mating surfaces and the nut/bolt threads.

Shit between the bolted together parts will eventually squash out and the bits will then be slack. EVEN IF YOU USED A PROPER TORQUE WRENCH and shit.

Buy a big box of Waterproof 'Bandaid' too while you're at it. Laughing

I agree with above that an adjustable spanner is asking for trouble. They're nigh on useless for high torque applications.

With a ring spanner or a socket wrench (preferably a long one) you'll crack it off on no time at all.

Go to halfords and buy a "breaker bar" which is basically a metal bar about 2 ft long with a socket holder on the end, and then put a socket on it. If you can't undo a rear axle with a two foot breaker bar, go to the gym!

Pick up the biggest Barbell you can find.
Take it home and batter shit out the bike with it. Evil or Very Mad

I have a mate who did up a GSXR750 spindle with a long 36mm ring spanner and a club-hammer. I had to cut the nut in half with a hacksaw and fit a new spindle. He had ripped all the threads out because he was worried he might not have done it up tight enough.
