i know i said i wouldnt use the net here, but im on duty tonight, which means i have to stay on board and in uniform all night and there is nothing else to do so i'll suffer the 4quid per hour price of this
just bought a new C&S for my bike, is it going to be easy to change, i kind of need my bike working, so i dont wanna start it then realise i cant finish it
do i need any special tools like a chain tool? how do you get the chain off? how do you get the wheel off? front sprocket? rear sprocket?
could anyone run through basically whats involved?

Hi Goose,
Depending on the new type of chain you have. If it's a rivet type link then you'll need the tool to do it. You can also squash the soft rivet with a mallet and something solid placed behind it and give it a good few strikes. Use a pair of mole grips to ensure the link plate is nicely in place over the soft link.
If you have something like a dremel or similar if your current chain is a rivet link use that to break the chain. If you have a soft link it's easy to remove. If you have a rivet link and no means to snap the chain then you are going to have to remove the rear wheel.
Get a can of chain cleaner/de-greaser spray and some old rags as now is the best time to clean the front sprocket area and chain rail of all that muck.
Make sure you get your torque setting right for the front sprocket!
Regards,
Kevo. |

hi
are you getting new sprockets too, i've heard getting the front sprocket off is a bit of a bitch, but if you can get that off i don't think you have to break the chain to get it on

You're welcome to make use of various tools of mine, but unfortunately no chain riveter (well, the cheap one I got was cheap, so broke ). I usually just get it on as best as possible then take it to the local shop (slowly) and get them to do the riveting. |
