Hi Guys,

Well, I go to pick up my third ZX6R. I check it over, take it for a spin and I'm chuffed to find out it's even better than expected. Pay the man and manoeuvre the bike out of a tight space onto the road. One of my gloves drops to the floor and it's just out of my reach, so I flick the stand down and get off the bike to get the glove. When my back is turned a hear a big crunch and I know in my heart that the bike has fallen off the side stand despite praying that I'd just heard a firework. I'd owned the bike for under 60 seconds. Embarassed Crying or Very sad

So I'm here to ask for some help with the damage:

1) Damage to lower left fairing and edge of front fairing. The left panel is bad enough to warrant changing. What is the cheapest/easiest option; 'new' panel off Ebay or 'repair guy'? If it's the latter, does anyone have a recommendation?

2) Broken Clutch lever. Is it worth plumping for an aftermarket lever off ebay or, for the sake of quality, forking out for a Kawasaki lever? I remember Dodsi's aftermarket lever snapping during riding...

3) Clutch plate/guard. It's pretty scratched (it was an annoying rough road) but not cracked, is it easy to replace these?

4) Indicator: Pretty easy, I'll get one off Ebay.

Thanks for the help Thumbs Up

Byke

Wishes he hadn't got so excited.

Bad luck mate.

Have a word with ram_doom he's just crashed and repaired his ZX6R.

You're looking at £750 min.
But fairings are 'remarkably' repairable if you have free time to do it and you know a little about body repairs

Or clash it together yourself with that PLastic stuff in the workshop forum lastweek. (Look for it yourself).
It will need respray.
Cant cut corners get a pro to do it.

I was quoted £800+ for the fairing on My Sprint ST (B4 Painting)when I fucked it this summer.
I glooed it together for half that. Matchless finish too.

Buy the OEM lever or you will have an odd looking fart of a thing.

The experience will be an addition to your 'Biking' portfolio.

May not make you a better rider just more carefull Laughing Karma

What model ZX6 is it ?

Anyway, get all the parts from Ebay. £200 should have you right again.

Unless there's bits hanging off (and you don't actually need lowers on ZX6 models up to and including the A models), sounds like you could have a bike that still does almost the same function for £3 - clutch lever from HG.

The ones for my SV look similar to the Suzuki ones. I reckon they do break easier when you crash, but I've never had any problems otherwise using them in the fairly harsh environment of club racing.

Ok, an indicator is useful, not essential though. Ideally get an original replacement from ebay, but could probably put a cheap one on if need be.

I would go the ebay route for the fairings, especially if they don't /have/ to be replaced now. Similar for the clutch cover; though I would also consider getting a kevlar protector that sticks ontop. Not only will it cover the scratches, but it will mean you're more likely to be able ride home if you do have a more serious crash.

How did you damage the clutch cover if the bike fell on the left side ?

Thanks for the help guys:

It's a J Model (2000) and green.

To be fair, apart from the lever and indicator, the damage is cosmetic so I'm fine with riding it with the scratches. Would be nice to get it back to what it was like before I paid for it tho.

I may have been a bit confusing: the part I'm referring to is the gold generator casting (thanks ram_doom for pointing this out). On the J Model it’s the part with the ‘ripples’ on it. Once purchased off Ebay, is it a relatively easy part to change?

That part is easy to change - just lean the bike over to the other side a bit to make sure no oil comes out Smile.

Which leads me to what may seem a stupid question:

What exactly is that part, and what does it 'do'? I'm guessing there's no liquid behind it?

Easy eh? I'm guessing the Smile means it's 'cowboy' easy! Razz

Because the clutch lever is on the left hand side?

I think I can beat that.

Picked up a KR1S (this is about 10+ years ago now) from a bike shop. Was evening and the shop was just closing, I got on the bike, fired it up, pulled about 5ft to the end of the road and waited to pull out. It was rush hour traffic and the main road was quite busy, but luckily a bus pulled up and flashed me out.....

I blipped the throttle, pulled out and the rear let go, slid round, then gripped and threw me off. This all happened in front of the guys locking up the shop, the bus load of people that stopped to let me out, and various passers by on foot (it was a high street).

Cracked the fairing and broke the fairing mounts. Had to tape up the fairing and ride home my new bike that after approx 20 seconds of ownership, I'd turned into something that looked like it came from a breakers yard!!! Embarassed Sad

Still, you gotta laugh, I think back now and it makes me chuckle. I even told my mates it fell off the side stand through sheer embarassement!!! Laughing

I thought that I was unlucky to spill the bike after just 20 minutes, but 20 seconds Laughing At least mine was an old shed anyways, dopping a brand new bike would be suicide material.

Me, cocky? Never! Wink I'm just looking forward to when (like in Barry's case) it starts to be funny!

If there is a plus side to dropping it off the side stand, it's that no other BCFers where there to see it!

D'oh, I just sold my streetfighter to buy the sports bike! Doh!

Na, to be fair the damage isn't anywhere near warranting a transfer to streetfighter.
