What's crackin'?

In a straight line, how does the ZX7R perform against modern 600cc bikes like let's say the GSXR 600 or ZX6R. Does it get outrunned? I know that the ZX7R gets left behind on the twisties, but how does it perform on straights against the 600cc's?

I mean, it feels very powerful. I haven't ridden any modern 600cc yet... but people say they're extremely quick.

I guess the torque is much more obvious in ZX7R and that it performs much better in the low revs. But is that all?

dunno but unless you plan on racing other bikes does it matter - it is still faster to a tonne than 99% of cars therefore it will be fun.

Nah, that's not the purpose of owning a bike. But I was just wondering because I might change to a 600cc. They must be great fun - and those little engines scream beautifully. But will I lack performance on straights? I want to upgrade, not vice versa.

Why not go for both of best worlds and get a GSXR750 or similar?

A normal ZX7R (98) has about 115bhp at the wheel if I remember rightly. A brand new ZX6R (2006, 636) makes 107. And the ZX7R has a better midrange and more torque.

Remeber a 8+ year old bike may lose horses over the years and the zxr will be considerably lighter.

Im thinking the 600 sports will be an upgrade- but not a haauge one.

Test ride one to find out how it compares to your ZX7R! Thumbs Up

A GSXR750 or probably even the 600 will destroy your current bike!

And I'd be willing to bet the modern 600 would both be and feel faster, despite the figures suggesting otherwise.

The modern 600 is lighter, more agile with better suspension and possible better thought out gearing. I would expect that over the quarter miles at worst the 600s would lose out by no more than .5s - if we're talking the latest bikes, I reckon they're probably faster over the quarter mile than the 7r.

I agree that there won't be much in it because of the 600s reduced weight, but it's not going to be much of an upgrade on the straights compared to the 7R.

No, it doesn't... the rider does. Like just about any bike with more than say 70 hp the rider can either keep up, leave the rest behind or get left behind depending on how good they are - power on the roads just doesn't mean half as much as rider skill Wink

Mate o mine flogged his Gixxer 600 (k5) a few months ago, thinking to get another bike next year, but went ahead and bought an old (94) cheap Gixxer 750. The 600 would leave it on the bends and straights we both reckon - plus it's got a full race system front to back on and it's not been jetted for it as far as we can tell.

With throttle to the stop in top it seems to max out at 140 ish, the 600 would touch nearly 160. If he bought a bike tommorrow it'd be the Gixxer 750 - handling of the 600, power a grade above, probably the best sports bike in the world right now, all round. (not fastest, but best, and so reckon all the mags).

The Triumph is worth considering, but for more or less the same money, and only a grand more than the 600s, it'd be smart money on the Gixxer 750 I reckon.

(Shame I can't fit on them, or the 1000s. They are made for midgets Sad Gonna start saving pennies for zzr1400 or a new Busa if they ever come out, or an updated Blackbird if they ever do it. Old mens bikes for fat bastards, y'see Smile )

Sounds like the speedo is way out or it's down on power. My old zxr750 will pull to 160 on the clock (showing just over 150 on gps) quite easily so a zx7r shouldn't have much trouble doing it.

The 600 is going to be a faster bike overall but i don't think it's enough of an upgrade. A newish 750 or 5 year old 1000cc would make more sense.

Ah it's a Gixxer 750 early 90s vintage (not zx7r) I was referring to so not sure what it should be putting out @ crank - 115/120 ish? With a race can and right jetting it should be more we reckon (maybe 115 at wheel at most), so yeah, prolly down on power right now.

Guy at work bought a Zx7r, reckons it's fast as fook, blows away this that the other, comes out with fanciful figures all the time. We call him 'Topper' for obvious reasons ("That's good but did I ever tell you about the time when..." etc).

They'll be quick bikes, but modern 600s weight 10-20kg less and make similar power figures, a little down on torque compared to the old 750s.

Still, old 750s will be cheaper to insure than modern 600s, and plenty of cheap bits about on ebay etc, so there's plenty to be said in favour of sticking with the ZX7r.

From an old bike catalogue the top speed of a 1994 GSXR750 is given as 250kph (~155mph), which seems about right. On that basis I would expect it to be indicating 170mph. Claimed 126hp.

Sounds like a fairly sick 750.

All the best

Not that it makes any difference, but an 06' C-model 636 should make more than 107 at the wheel.

The only upgrade your likely to notice will be the slightly more sophisticated technology. Sheer power wise it isn't going to make any difference.

Last year i traded my '99 SRAD 600 gixer for a K5 750 - frankly i'm still blown away by the advances made in biking technology in a few short years!
It's not so much the increase in power and the decrease in weight that makes the difference - it's things like the sharper steering and more powerful brakes that really make the difference to me - plus it feels tiny in comparison to the SRAD, which (much as i love them) are lardy old buses.
Modern bikes are great, i love them, anyone who says different is either a liar, jealous or stupid - or possibly a combination of all three!
Very Happy

In a straight line a Gixxer 600 is barely faster than the 7R, it is so marginal and you have to nail either bike to get in front, and even then, you’ll be running out of road before you can say you’re bike is faster.
A 7R can be altered with very little cash spent and it will keep up with any modern 600 on some twistys, it isn’t set up that hard out of factory.

Nope

The only bike I have been impressed with at a similar cc’s is the new ninja, a guy at ‘Little N Large’ near me has one, it is quite a machine.
A gixxer 750 is an awesome bike, on track it would probably kill the 7R as standard. I use mine only on the road, so I got the better looking machine.

Fancy clarifying that with some evidence?
From what I remember, your bike was slower that Ste’s ZX6R from the times at the same drag strip. Though of course that doesn’t have to mean much.

I had a look around and the best I could come up with was…
https://www.sportrider.com/bikes/146_performance_numbers/index5.html
Now it’s hard to get a good comparison, but you’d hope such a magazine would have decent riders in all cases. I presume those times are not including reaction times etc as well.

This suggests that the G model ZX6 was faster than the ZX7, while the J1 is a bit slower and the J2 about the same (maybe gearing changes?), then the rest of the ZX6 range after that is faster.

‘Keeping up in the twisties with a modern sports bike’ doesn’t have to mean much – I’ve seen an old DR600 keep up with modern sports bikes in a set of ‘twisties’.
However, put the same rider on a modern 600 or a ZX7 and I’d be willing to bet 95% of riders would be faster on the 600.

G, before you go off on one sprouting all the stats from the internet you can find, if you’ve been to any drag strip the 7R is up there is the same times as most of the 600’s. My 7R at the time was due the full service, the plugs were shot, the air filter wasn’t up to much….the list goes on, not only does this effect the point something something of a time, the rider counts for the large %.
And as the question was ‘in a straight line’ and I presume, on the road, does this .118347 or what ever really matter.

I’ve seen a DR600 go fast to, great… Rolling Eyes

Hasen't this topic been argued to the death about 3 hundred times? Laughing

Most of it is down to the rider, infact the majority of it is down to the rider as to how fast he or she goes on it.

I've been at brands lapping 10 seconds a lap faster than an R1 / GSXR1000, on my ZXR750. So what! I've also been 10 seconds SLOWER than the same (or simelar) bikes with different riders.

An old ZXR I had about 7 years ago now, would absolutly obliterate my mates GSXR600. This all means nothing as its all down to the rider, even more so in the 'twisties'.

I can see this being a long thread Laughing

Yep, comes round as regular as clock work, and I still stand by liking the old girls.

My choice, my money, my opinion.

My thoughts exactly.

If I wanted the latest race rep 600, I'd buy one. I like the classic bikes with character, and not something you see on every street corner. Just because the bike mags tell you its the best 600 / 750 / 1000 out there, doesn't mean its going to suit you.

Personally I would never buy a 600 IL4, my riding style doesn't suit rev'ing the nuts out of an engine to get going at a decent pace.

Wink Thumbs Up
