A friend of mine is a learner, with his own car. He has it insured under his own name, so he can go out in with a suitably qualified driver.
Now I've had my licence for 3 years I count as a suitably qualified driver to go out in his car with him.

However, I'm only insured to drive my own car. Would I need to be on his insurance, seeing as I would technically be instructing him.

Only if you were driving it, so just stay away from motorways.

As far as I am aware if he is insured on the car and has a driver who is over the age of 21 and had their licence for 3 years then your within the law.

Your right craig, IIRC it has to be a relatively clean licence aswell because it would be no good being supervised by somebody who has been caught speeding/on the mobile etc etc

Long as he is insured and you dont drive your cool Thumbs Up

They don't need a clean licence, just a 3 year old licence and be over 21.

I just thought of this one:

The 'learner' phones one of the lassies at the Insurers...

They will be happy to advise and issue covernotes if any amendments are required.

A no brainer for moi. Cool

I'm pretty sure the 'instructor' does need to be legally able to drive the car, so that in the case of a situation where the 'instructor' needs to drive the car home as the learner is too rubbish, you are legally able to do so.

Worth checking with the DVLA/Police.

I used to work in insurance, it has been a few months since I left now but from my knowledge a learner driver can't have a policy in his or her own name? Only when they have a full lience they can have a policy on there own. Confused

answer yes you can, as long as you don't drive the car

You can insure anything you're licened to drive, with a provisional license you're licensed to drive it with an appropriate person passenger.

If learners weren't allowed to have a policy on there own there that'd be lots of uninsured 50cc & 125 bikes about. Razz

What to do next:

Use the car with you as Kwolified driver.
If you get caught by the police show them a copy of this thread.

I'm sure that should be sufficient. Shocked

They company I worked for did not insure car drivers on a provisional licence on a policy of their own!!!! As a company we did not feck up and to be honest if anything did go wrong we would have tried our hardest to still make people like yourself happy.

Its when people try and twist ways around the rules to make it cheaper for themselves end up, in the long run, losing out.

They would have to be named on somebody elses policy until they passed.

The company I used to work for would insure a learner on their own policy, as long as there was also a fully qualified driver on the policy, though this driver did not have to be the one sitting in the passenger seat when the learner was driving.

My girlfriend was insured on her own as a leaner on her car.

Her mum didn't need to be insured to take her out in it.

Also Norwich Union did her a HUGE discount for having a provisional for about 6 years, worth bearing in mind.

I've often wondered the same thing as Robby, I've just found this that seems to say the supervising driver needs to be insured on the vehicle as well.
