front brake master cylinder

well, ive always had this with this master cylinder on the bike,
i have to pull the lever in about a cm before at starts moving the fluids and starts slowing me down. there is nothing at all in the way of resistance in that first bit.
it doesnt leak, it doesnt have air in the lines, its got braided lines.
is some sort of seal gone in the master cylinder??

It's possible the problem is at the other end - the caliper pistons are getting knocked back slightly (warped disks, loose calipers, busted wheel bearing...) in between your attempts to brake. Then, every time you pull the lever, the first bit of movement is undoing the knock-back.

That's easy to diagnose - try repeatedly pulling the brake without actually riding the bike anywhere,

Another possibility is if you have slightly over-eager caliper piston seals which are pulling the piston back too far when you let off the brake. Again, when you pull the brake lever, the first bit of movement is overcoming this.

just had a test, it does the same thing wether the bike is moving or not, and did it even when i was bleeding the brake system.
i watched the calipers when i was pulling the lever in. it doent move the caliper until there is the fluid resistance, its like there is a complete dead spot before the brake reaches the piston and presses it in.
im miffed.

Hi

Try wrapping some cloth around the top banjo bolt, pull the brake lever hard and keep it that way while you crack the banjo bolt off and tighten it again. Gets rid of any air bubbles stuck at the top of the system.

with that little slack it could just be the MC dust cap being compressed before you get to the piston itself. It could also be that the pivot pin or the hole in the lever is worn.
