PostPosted: 14:28 - 13 Nov 2006    Post subject: Mancunian way on L Plates???? Reply with quote

Hi all,

this is probbly a really stupid post so please forgive my ignorance before shooting me down in flames Smile
ok - ive been riding back from work on the mancunian way (A57 i think) for the past couple o months since passing my CBT.
I usually go into work a different way cos its a little easier in the morning rush hour.
Recently my bike broke, and hence aint been riding, but over the weekend i got a taxi that took me the way i would ride into work if i went on the manc way, and noticed that the big A57 sign was actually in blue with a big motorway bridge symbol on it and the road is actually signed as A57(M).
Now from my car theory test i did 12 month ago (not got round to my bike one yet) i was under the imression that all motorways were M roads, not A roads.
Ive not had any law related problems yet and seen quite a few coppers on there when ive had my l plates on and nothings been done, but after seeing that sign over the weekend im a little concerned.
So is the mancunian way a motorway or an A road and am i ok to drive on it with my L plates?

Thanks

Gaz.

There is something very similar here in Cardiff, we have the A48, which eventually becomes the A48 (M), then eventually the M4 :p

I wouldn't worry about it, the road is simply heading towards a motorway, you're not under motorway legislation at the time so you're not doing anything wrong Smile

I am probably wrong, but I assumed that the A48(M) was under motorway regulations... Confused

So did I ! I always avoid that going that way when I'm riding out with my girlfriend as she's on a 125.

Just found this :-

"Roads whose only destination is a motorway must be assigned motorway status, notwithstanding the possibility of their not being built to normal motorway standards. For example, the A48(M) motorway outside Cardiff begins after the last exit to St Mellons, since by staying on the dual carriageway you cannot get anywhere other than the M4 eastbound; however, it is a motorway-grade highway."

So it looks like it is a motorway.

Cheers

Dave

To be honest I dont think the mancunian way has anything like that and the m part of it is only a mile or 2 long i think.

If you see blue signs it's a no go!

I work at the University of Manchester and quite often use Mancunian way in the car, I've come so close to just auto-piloting myself onto there on my little 125!

I have to travel on the A3 which then turns into A3 (M)

I thought I was allowed on this as it still is an A road untill the signs go blue (M)
Ive been riding on it for months.
Its an absoult buger, as the part to my house is only a mile long yet it got turned in to a (M)

Ah well, guess I was wrong then.

I often rode on the A48 (M) on my TZR with my L-plates on. Never really saw police drive past me but never had a problem from other drivers or anything, I did it for months on a nearly daily basis.

I ride over the "MANCY" way on my 125 (L's) when its quiet as i work nights. Only really do it if i'm being particularly lazy or im late for work. I was kind of under the assumption that you shouldn't be on it as it doesn't lead to any motorways and is really only a duel carriageway with a 50mph limit. Hmm may start using it all the time and play dumb as it probs saves ten mins going through town

At least ill miss filtering through the mile long queue for the motorway though Smile

You are allowed on it so long as it's still just the A3. I think after the Horndean turn off southbound it's an (M) if I remember right.

Used to use it all the time when I had my 125.

You can carry on till you come to Cosham. The fly over is where the (M) starts... This is were I have to come off, or join.
But if its dead I ride onto the (M) till the next junction. Takes 20 mins off my journey.

Just had a quick look and it is definitely (M) from Horndean down. Link. It does seem to stop for the A27 bit though. Think we might both be right, sort of.

Tbh I'd be happy to plead ignorance on roads like this though. Wouldn't be surprised if even some coppers aren't sure of the exact rules.

The A5 approaching the M54 toward Shrewsbury clearly shows the last exit before the road becomes motorway and directs all non-motorway traffic off the road at that point.

You'd assume that there should be something similar for the Mancunian way... maybe a letter to the local transport agency asking for clarification would be worthwhile?

That section of road (the A3(M) down to the A27) is often crawling with Hantspol in marked & unmarked cars and on bikes. That section has been featured on Police, Camera, Action quite a few times.

it's a bit difficult to sign it as its's a big flyover. I dont recall seeing any signs that say non motorway traffic at exits as you see on a lot of others ie the A666 coming out of bolton (although that turns into the M60 which is a real Motorway)
