i have to ask partly due to debating with my dad, but also a few comments on here, does the amount of road tax you pay give you certain entitlement to road amount and usage legally or morally?
e.g, does a 50cc moped have the right to use the part of road with the yellow/white line on and a car whichever part it wants? Rolling Eyes
all in accordance within rules of the highway code of course Wink

We have more right - we can filter. the tax is lower because bikes are generally used less, and are lighter, so therefore contribute less to road wear. Having said that, a 30 mph crash between two cars will result in a quick hospital checkup followed by a sending home. A 30mph crash between a car and a bike can result in death and/ or serious injury, wasting more NHS money.

Anyhoo, we all have the same rights. Except horse riders, tractor drivers and cyclists of course...

Awaits abuse....

Hi

Legally you have no more or less rights to the road for paying more / less VED.

Morally there may well be a case for more tax = more rights, but plenty would argue otherwise.

All the best

Its unclear in that bikes use all the width of the road and quite often I ride on the white lines
also a bike all things being legal is supposed to take up the same space as a car , ie 2-3 seconds
from the front with the vehicle behind @ 2-3 seconds per +10mph over 30, reality is different cus I
can fit between cars and in all the iffy spaces.

also there is the concept of pressure,

In that my bike may well weigh 250 kilos with me on the back , but you also have to consider that
my contact patch is less than a size 6 shoe ,

while a car may well weigh 5 times more say 1250 kilos , but ONE of his wheels has a greater contact
patch than both of mine , such that the pressure on the ground is somewhat less = poss ;ess wear

I remember when I replaced the tyres on MY Mazda 323 which my sister has more or less stolen from me
with a loose tyre in the wet , the mark the car tyre made was greater than the mark of both my bike tyres
on the NTV600 at the time.

just to complicate things further , only one of our wheels acts as a drive wheel, while cars it is two or
four.

The highways have equal use by all vehicles, as long as not stated otherwise on the road ie: bus lanes, Maximum weight restrictions etc

The tax is a duty, and not subscription to use the road. You pay tax to allow your vehicle use of the road. A cyclist has every right to use the road but isn't taxed as the impact they have on the road is seem as minimal. It could be argued that the tax that person pays in VAT, and Income tax etc is enough.

I don't think that morality comes into it!

If the road tax collected was spent on the roads we would have the best roads in the world with no potholes overbanding etc just race track smooth tarmac

That's far too sensible for an idea. A better idea would be to fix one road in an entire town, perfectly surfaced and then destroy every other road near the town by hiring incompetant fuckheads (they might be retarded monkeys but I'm not sure) to lay pipes and resurface the road to simulate a mountain track.

True story, I'd rather drive up a mountain than have to ride around my town anymore but that's just impractical and a waste of money. I'm not like whoever coordinates the roadworks.

Where on earth is all our money going when they're blatently cheaping out on the roads? The government needs a good shake up, they keep taxing us more but I'm not seeing anything positive that they're doing for us. Thumbs Down

Around here, everytime i see them resurfacing a road, i know it means next week some gas company/bt will come dig it all up to lay new pipes. They are retarded, they always have to mess around with the pipes after the road has been resurfaced.

I was on the understanding that tax class is based on the amount of emissions your vehicle gives out?

IE A larger engine will (generally) give out more harmful emissions than a smaller engine, hence they get taxed more to lower their appeal.

So... Looking at it that way, morally we have the high ground as we're protecting the environment Very Happy

Compare an R1 to a Micra 1 litre. I'm sure the R1 will be killing far more furry little animals through emissions.

well, apart from living in nice big houses, paying police to catch us speeding and earning £god-knows-what k per year, i wouldn't be able to hazard a guess neither, you certainly can't see it in the roads round here.

Only really on CO2, for those who care about it. And considering that CO2 emissions are pretty much directly related to fuel used, taxing engine capacity when the fuel is already taxed is a pretty stupid idea.

All the best

Agreed Thumbs Up

Air recirc systems and lean burn are the only two ways i can think of to recude CO2 emissions. I don't know of any cars that are lean burn, but i'm not sure if any have air-recirc.

Lean burn will (but died a death as it did not work well with cats), but if anything an air recirculation system will increase CO2 emissions (although as it will do that by reducing CO emissions people would probably be happier with it!).

All the best

yup my MP added 25K to his expenses and employs his wife as secretary also extracting another 22K out the tax pater , such that his pay may only be 80K but his perks + occupational pension mean he pulls in 350K,

Road tax, or Vehicle Excise Duty to give it its proper name is a tax on owning a vehicle and nothing to do with building or maintaining roads.

The governement doesnt see fit to tax people for owning a cycle or a horse as they are hardly luxery items.

Roads are the responsibility of the local authority, which is funded by council tax.

So, people who dont own a car or a bike still pay council tax so are in effect subsidising those who do use the road a lot for personal use. (as opposed to taking buses and just generally benifiting from the roads being there).

My bicycle was quite a bit more exspensive than my Yamaha YBR125!! And I think buying and keeping a Horse would definitely considered a Luxury item!! Razz You also pay VAT on all vehicals. At the end of the day they're just ripping drivers off because they can and like all essential items they know they can get away with it.
