hi people, today i enquired about courier insurance as im thinking of becoming a courier (self employed Razz no boss breathing down my neck Thumbs Up ) my normal TPO insurance is £409.00 on my cagiva super city 125 (with 3 pts, yes bad boy i know lol) filled out an online instant quote in my usual details and valued my bike at £350 (as have done for my actual insurance) to get a base, then instead of 'SD&P' i put 'despatch rider' and the final quote came to £4,300 for TPO-despatch rider Shocked Shocked


does anyone know of a cheaper insurance company for despatch riders or is this quote about average for this kind of required insurance? cheers for your replys james

i now insurance companys are really reluctant to offer insurance to riders who travel to work without a permenant work address, unless your actually going into the business now, it might be worth saving up, getting insurance when cash is no issue if it's not already..

i once asked my insurance company if i could use my bike for business use (DVD delivery whilst working for the local video shop), they said no as :''it is just a glorified taxi driver'' i thought WTF? pricks.
went under different company next time but had already departed company from video shop.

You're best working for a company, getting some experience, riding a decent courier bike and saving.

After working for a while you can become self employed, use the companies customers Wink and be a competant courier Thumbs Up

You do know all couriers are self employed don't you, and that we sign things like customer non disclosure agreements?

Similar problem.. Except my bike was a gsxf750, and I got quoted 2.5K. Needless to say I decided against it.
Spoke to a couple of companies, and they all said I should wait till I was at least 25 before considering it, as the insurance is stupid.

Only 4 more years...

I use my bike for work, but luckily I only need class 1 business. I still find it adds about £150 to my premiums. When I first started it was about £300-400 extra.

Courier is probably best sourced from ads in the courier mags. I can't give you any titles, but maybe someone else can. A lot of bike rental companies offer courier insurance and a bike for around £100 per week. Which is fine if you have lots of work, so can afford it.

what didnt you like about it? i love riding my bike around all day going to different places in and around london and finding out new routes to places, im never off it really tbh! just thought why not get payed for doing what i enjoy.

whats a courier all about then, obviously delivering stuff but what other aspects are there to being a courier, pro's and con's??

The thing is you WILL have to ride like a fuckin' lunatic to earn decent money; the amount of really stupid shit I've done just to make deadlines still freaks me out when I think back to it.

Last but not least is the weather: Know when you sit at home and decide to give the ride a miss because of the pouring rain? You don't get that choice when it's your job, you're out there 5 days a week come rain or shine. I got caught out in a snowstorm in '03 and my usual commute home went from a 45 minute drag in to a 3 hour ordeal and I was STILL expected to come in to work the next day and got fined £25 when I didn't (good luck finding a firm that's run by people that give a shit about you).

And if all that hasn't dissuaded you then go do it and you'll find out all about just how shit it is.

Seriously though man, if you have another option for work steer WELL clear.

thanx for that OCTANE, i really never thought about it in that much detail. tbh i never even considered all that mentioned above, probably because i never knew about any of that Shocked i think il reconsider/think really hard about becoming a courier. id love to get a job riding my bike as thats what i love doing more than anything. even when i was a petrol-diesel fitter for hss hire service i use to take the longest possible way to and from work just so i could be out riding my bike! (yes im a weirdo, i know LOL) are there any jobs anyone knows of that mean being self employed and on your bike all day? thanks for all your info peeps Thumbs Up

i know how you feel, i'm starting process of trying different jobs like but my current job is nice and rewarding so i like it, therefore it would just be weekends for a riding job, anyone know how you apply for pizza delivery etc, do you fill out application forms and go for interviews and crap Question
