Yeah I'm a sucker for the old skool cool, and with the luck that I've had with bikes so far, I may regret even thinking of this but...

...What are old 2 strokers like for blasting about on a sunny day?

Seen a few on ebay, couple of quid more than I would really like to pay for a fun bike but getting pissed off with no bike

i used to have an rgv 10 or so years ago, wicked bike, the best road bike any 15 year old could ever ride on the road (nz laws are cool )
the problem with 2strokes is running costs and maintanance.
the rgvs are a pain to work on and are so highly tuned that rebuilds are fairly frequent, why not look for an old skool 2smoke like the rd400 or kr250
or some other classic jappa 2stroke
id get one if you are mechanically apt or dont mind getting your hands dirty, the only things that are normally tricky are the powervalves in the newer ones

Absolutly superb, my bike is a weekend toy and it's a 2smoke. 4 strokes just dont give you the same buzz by a long way.

It took me 12 years to finally take the plunge after 1st seeing an NSR250 in B&M Imports (now Fastline) and I havent regreted it one bit.

Do it, I used to own a TZR250R and that thing was so much fun. Really worked it around the country roads , it was so flickable and smooth it just made the whole experience perfect.

I think a lot of people are suprised just how fast the 250 strokers are.

Im sure gsxrmick will be here soon. *Doh*

my nsr125r is great fun, it accelerates well and responds when you want it too, up until about 70mph, anything more than that acceleration is slow.

Its a brilliant little bike, as long as you can deal with the engine exploding once every 30k miles or so (assuming you maintain it very well)

thats me on the rgv in the middle........ my mate is on the 350lc in front of me and the 3xv tzr's come from all over, as do the 100+ other strokers that arent in that picture....

ive got an rs125 (de-restricted) and its great fun
if funds allow when ive passed my test to have two bikes im definatley going to go for an rs250. if the rs125 is anything to go by then the 250 should be amazing

I've got a 75 Rd350 as my main bike. Use it for going to Ashbourne once a year, and runs to Squires / local terrorism. Love it to bits, but it did need a few modern touches to make it really reliable. If you think say a 400 inline four is peaky and hard to ride then you need to ride my RD, great fun if you are in the mood and irritating if you are just trying to get somewhere or cruise on the motorway - it'll do the mundane things but it's about as much fun as ironing your bollocks! Not a huge fan of the more modern two strokes, all the fragility and then some without the simplicity.

As of tonight the above problem is already fixed and the old bastard is clattering away again. RD's and LC's also have the advantage of cheap and available parts along with being a piece of piss to work on. The only real reliability problem on mine (other than the above random piston failure) was the battery undercharging and causing a weak spark (combination of old generator and modern halogen headlamp).

I have an RGV250, but its lunched its big end bearings so haven't ridden it for ages. When it works its excellent though!

I like the KR1's but id never own one as the parts are almost impossible to find. Ive always wanted a rgv250 or a tzr250 tho. I will eventually own either one

I'm on the look out for a TZR 3MA or project Aprilia RS250, possibly a RGV 250 or Honda NSR250 but most of them go for silly money due to their rarity.
But yeah, the 250 smokers are fun.

If you like two strokes, then great! Most people either like them or hate them however, there's little middle ground!

If your looking for a cheap to buy and run bike (2 stroke) for the winter, or until you have saved for another big bike, then i would possibly consider avoiding the majority of thrashed/crashed/worn out and bodged&tuned 250cc race reps and sportsbikes.

I can't help thinking that if you buy a cheap RGV etc, that it will make the FZR600 you had seem like very good VFM in comparison. The running and maintainece costs on such a bike, are not to be taken lightly or under estimated. I know of a guy who had a TDR250 for winter/ riding to work etc. He found out after a while that it was costing much more to run than his Blade, so he sold it and started using the Blade instead.

Are you possibly open to older or not so sought after sportsbike 2s strokes? If so then there may be some bargains to be had, but i very much doubt you would get a nice really useabe and reliable RGV for less than around £2200. A cheap one will be money pit or a big mistake depending on how much you have to spend on one?
The KR1S, isn't really as good overall as the RGV, and some parts are now out of stock and unobtainable new, so it could be alot of hassle if you need to do alot of work on one.

For a winter bike, it surely doesn't matter if its an RD250/GT250X7/RG250/TZR250, or anything really? An older bike thats been looked after and had a bit of money spend on it would be my choice any day over a 12yr old+ RGV250, thats on it's last legs and about to blow up spectaculary which they are famous for!

Im a 2 stroke fan, but i still like big four bangers too. I always want to own at least one 2 stroke bike at any particular time, but im not that fussy about what they are?

Currently iv'e got a kawasaki KMX200, and a CCM500 enduro bike with a Rotax 500 air cooled motor.

Im possibly after an AR125, KE175, or DT400MX as my next project bike though!
