and the whole point was, it was not a reasonable request, because the 4rth ammendment grants the individual rights to refuse. You rationalised it as being reasonable because the guy was possibly of middle eastern descent and may have c4 taped to his body.

Yes, ok then, I'm going to bow out of this one now as I didn't say or mean that at all and you are just making me out to be a bad person which I am not.

In todays world where we are constantly under threat from terrorist attacks we have to be cautious, people from western countries generally understand this, all he was asked for was ID, would have taken a few seconds of his time to show this.

They did go way over the top with how much he was tasered but then he was being abusive and still failing to comply despite knowing he was on the losing end of it.

The footage is shocking (no pun intended), they did go way over the top for what the situation was but he did himself no favours to stop it happening, he could've just said 'ok I'll show ID' but instead he reeled off a torrent of abuse.

I'm not condoning random shockings but if you were in say a busy shopping centre and you saw some muslims, maybe wearing veils refusing to show ID to the police, what would be your reaction, understanding and tell the police to go home they don't need to ask these people for ID?

I think that, as part of training, any officer who is going to carry one should be tazered themselves. It would give them a unique insight into what it feels like, and exactly what you are capable of when you've been hit. Might cut back on the repeat tazerings once they've got someone once. Same with CS spray/gas and any other "non lethal" methods of restraint.

Not my concern. I've more chance of dying from flu, being hit by a bus or beaten up whilst walking home from the pub drunk than I do of walking into a terror strike.

I'm all for people standing up for there civil rights and against the police abusing them. Losing our civil liberties under the illusion of safety is bullshit.

I think our police have to experience cs spray before they can carry it on patrol......Its a good idea IMO to give the person a first hand account of the power they weild.

Just because it doesn't happen often doesn't mean we can't ignore the fact that it does exist and could happen at any point, it's not as if they send out invitations to get blown up is it.

Then can you please explain how the police demanding papers from a random group of muslims would make me any safer? As in your example?

For the record. If a copper randomly walked up to me and demanded to see ID, I would refuse.

If he wants to find out who I am that badly, he'll just have to arrest me and be prepared to deal with whatever consequences arise from that.

It's all circumstancial, you have no idea what that guy was doing before the police arrived or when they first spotted him, he could've been sitting there looking nervous for no aparrent reason. I would prefer it if people were checked if police felt it was necessary, I wouldn't be bothered about being ID'd if I was looking a bit dodgy, takes a few seconds if you're compliant and you're on your way again.

Nazi seems a rather inappropriate and tabloid way of describing Phanyomtek's views - perhaps 'Authoritarianist' woud be more appropriate (also generally considered less insulting).
The Nazi's believed in many things (good and bad), many of which I often see displayed in attitudes of posters on here; hardly seems fair to single out this aspect in this case.

Quote:
Here's how it is in the free world...no cunt in a uniform gets to come up to me, just because he feels like it, and demand to see my 'papers'.

The law's of this land say different if you use a motorvehicle, I believe.
Beating them up or other petty thuggery won't change the rules - and I'd suggest is more likely to see people such as your self abused in future.

I'm not aware that any muslim women have been implicated in any 'terror' based goings on, so I wouldn't be overly worried.

What does that have to do with repeatedly tasering him? The first few shots in the computer room and on the stairs were bad enough, but they continued tasering him again downstairs even when it was clear the guy was totally incapacitated.

If they hadn't tasered him downstairs I would have suggested this was a borderline case of abuse - They wanted to cart him off and he refused so they used cruel and innapropriate means to control him. The key fact in that situation would be whether he'd actually committed any offence in the first place. I am very skeptical of offences such as "Assaulting a police officer" and "Resisting arrest", since that basically means the police can pick on innocent people and if you defend yourself you're breaking the law. In a sense they have a license to start fights.

However the dowstairs part did happen, and as far as I'm concerned what they did was no better than tying him to a chair and beating him up. Losing their jobs would be to good for them, they deserve prison sentences for that Thumbs Down

Because a few people with that view and different opinions leads to quite a lot of violence, including, usually to the people in question's family and friends.

I should have stated 'in this country', for the record.

I'm of the opinion that while 'people' may not respect each other or government authority; giving the impression they do keeps a society running moderately safely.

Disgusting, couldn't even watch it.

What 'The Law' get away with is fucking criminal. I swear if anything like that ever happened to me I would find the person responsible and put them through pain they could never imagine.

Makes me fucking sick. Evil or Very Mad

There seemed to be far more officer's there than was necessary. It would require two of them to merely ask for his ID. If he didnt/wouldnt show it then they should say for security reasons it would be necessary to check that his name was on some form of database, which they would no doubt be able to get fairly quick access too.

It wasnt necessary to tazer the guy once, let alone repeatedly.

My main concern was the lack of help at someone being assaulted. Regardless of whether theyre in a uniform or not, they deserve to have been attacked by a mob and had to be carried away to A&E.

@ShaggyDA, it says that all officers have the tazer tested on them during their training.

@Phantomtek, I agree that site is extremely biased, I also can understand your viewpoint, but read what I've put above. It is also in the law that they do not have to show ID. So the only person breaking the law in that video are the officer's. The student was well within his right to do so, however rude and unnecessary it may have been.

I suspect that you'll find that any university has rules in place to govern access to areas such as computer labs and libraries. No-one forces you to go to university against your will, and usually one has to sign some form of compact to comply with certain rules such as producing ID when accessing services - I know I did. As such, it is entirely possible that the chap in question had absolutely no right to fail to show ID - assuming that was the actual starting point for the whole kick off anyway.

With regards to the video, it shows none of the pre-amble to the incident, and very little of the actual control and restraint techniques used. We have no idea why the officers wanted the guy's ID, nor how they asked, why they were there, or how he responded. We see little of the physical use of force, and I did not see as much definitive proof of the constant use of the Tazer as the article suggests. Much of the screaming - especially in the latter half of the video - could potentially be ascribed to the use of legitimate control and restraint techniques, Lord knows I've dragged enough little (and big) foreign chaps down to seg. wailing and screaming just like that - pain is an accepted technique to enforce compliance.

As to the use of the Tazer itself, personally I see it as overkill, although I'm not familiar with US policies on it's employment. I saw at least 3 officers on the video, which is enough to immobilise and restrain all but the most stupidly strong or mental 'victims'. Seeing as they used the Tazer and thus had at least one officer free, I fail to see why they allowed the crowd of students to impinge on the C&R, regardless of your thoughts on their restraint techniques, failure to isolate the incident is simply sloppy work.

I love how Colin has once again charged into the fray with limited information and jumped to several conclusions, all of which are anti-Babylon in nature - how consistent.

Watch the video again. I can remember hearing them using the tazer on at least 5 distinct occasions. I'm sure If you counted there'd be up to about 8 or 9 uses of it. When they use it you hear a 'buzzing' sound. Plus most of the occasions the officers threaten to use it for several seconds before actually using it.

I'm sorry, but all you defending the officers have yet to address the key fact: The end part of the video dowstairs. The guy is shown incapacitated on the floor for several minutes, clearly not able to move, and the crowd of students around them are challenging the officers demanding to know why they are continuing to harm the guy. Yet the fuckers continue to tazer him at least another two times Evil or Very Mad Fucking disgusting, I agree with BlackKnight I'd be taking personal (violent) revenge on anyone who did something like that to me, badge or no badge.

Err. No. In the US it is a constitutional right. You can't take it away from someone unless they amend the constitution.

They can refuse to extend you the service without seeing ID but they can't arrest you for failing to do so when requested by a policeman.

Arguing in favour of the behaviour shown in that video is failing to distinguish between freedom and oppression (specifically state oppression), that or being in favour of it.

Look at the actual situation from another point of view:
You are minding your own business, (Insert your location), you have broken no law, damaged nothing. Just getting on with work. Someone (and they look like campus security to me) asks you for ID. The fact that its ID is irrelevant. For someone to, in this case demand ANYTHING from you through the electrodes of a taser is not on. No Justification.

Surely on private property that you have chosen to be on, things are different?

Regardless, there is no proof that ID was at the centre of this incident anyway.

I'll be honest, I got bored of it by then.

You heard it 5 times, but you reckon it was at least 8?! Seems to be a lot of tazer-inflation going on in this thread.

They are Campus Police, as mentioned in the article, I assume that carries slightly more weight than our uni security, if they are allowed Tazers.

Other than that, you are also jumping to immense conclusions that you have no evidence for. Your hypothetical situation would indeed be upsetting, but we have no proof that it bears any relationship to what actually occured in this instance.

Agreed, but its scary the speed people will immediatley condone state sponsored violence in the name of security....An independant investigation is happening and it'll be interesting to see if the police were justified.

I'd hope that the police are disciplined, because regardless of the reasoning I believe their use of force was disproportionate, ineffective and ultimately self-defeating.

I simply decry the attitude that they must be wrong because they are wearing a uniform and are being slagged off by a hysterically anti-government website. It even smacked to me slightly of a set-up, bearing in mind the comments screamed by the 'victim'. If I'd just been tazered, I wouldn't be attempting to publicise my insights into the abuse of recent anti-terrorism legislation - I think I'd have other more pressing concerns.
