In todays world where we are constantly under threat from terrorist attacks we have to be cautious, people from western countries generally understand this, all he was asked for was ID, would have taken a few seconds of his time to show this.
They did go way over the top with how much he was tasered but then he was being abusive and still failing to comply despite knowing he was on the losing end of it.
The footage is shocking (no pun intended), they did go way over the top for what the situation was but he did himself no favours to stop it happening, he could've just said 'ok I'll show ID' but instead he reeled off a torrent of abuse.
I'm not condoning random shockings but if you were in say a busy shopping centre and you saw some muslims, maybe wearing veils refusing to show ID to the police, what would be your reaction, understanding and tell the police to go home they don't need to ask these people for ID?

I think that, as part of training, any officer who is going to carry one should be tazered themselves. It would give them a unique insight into what it feels like, and exactly what you are capable of when you've been hit. Might cut back on the repeat tazerings once they've got someone once. Same with CS spray/gas and any other "non lethal" methods of restraint. ____________________ Current: CB500 Previous: CB100N, CB250RS, XJ900F, GT550, GPZ750R/1000RX, AJS M16, R100RT, Enfield Bullet

Erm, maybe he left his ID at home? I guess he got what he deserved then . The guy was trying to leave the room while they were tazering him. |

Disgusting, couldn't even watch it.
What 'The Law' get away with is fucking criminal. I swear if anything like that ever happened to me I would find the person responsible and put them through pain they could never imagine.
Makes me fucking sick. ____________________ Where does a turn end? 'Where you can do anything with the gas you want to, where you are brave again, where your attention is free from the turn, where you are sure you can do it better next time; that's the end' - Keith Code. |

I suspect that you'll find that any university has rules in place to govern access to areas such as computer labs and libraries. No-one forces you to go to university against your will, and usually one has to sign some form of compact to comply with certain rules such as producing ID when accessing services - I know I did. As such, it is entirely possible that the chap in question had absolutely no right to fail to show ID - assuming that was the actual starting point for the whole kick off anyway.
With regards to the video, it shows none of the pre-amble to the incident, and very little of the actual control and restraint techniques used. We have no idea why the officers wanted the guy's ID, nor how they asked, why they were there, or how he responded. We see little of the physical use of force, and I did not see as much definitive proof of the constant use of the Tazer as the article suggests. Much of the screaming - especially in the latter half of the video - could potentially be ascribed to the use of legitimate control and restraint techniques, Lord knows I've dragged enough little (and big) foreign chaps down to seg. wailing and screaming just like that - pain is an accepted technique to enforce compliance.
As to the use of the Tazer itself, personally I see it as overkill, although I'm not familiar with US policies on it's employment. I saw at least 3 officers on the video, which is enough to immobilise and restrain all but the most stupidly strong or mental 'victims'. Seeing as they used the Tazer and thus had at least one officer free, I fail to see why they allowed the crowd of students to impinge on the C&R, regardless of your thoughts on their restraint techniques, failure to isolate the incident is simply sloppy work.
I love how Colin has once again charged into the fray with limited information and jumped to several conclusions, all of which are anti-Babylon in nature - how consistent. ____________________ >Soultrader Mister James, I bet you are a copper

Err. No. In the US it is a constitutional right. You can't take it away from someone unless they amend the constitution.
They can refuse to extend you the service without seeing ID but they can't arrest you for failing to do so when requested by a policeman. |
Surely on private property that you have chosen to be on, things are different?
Regardless, there is no proof that ID was at the centre of this incident anyway.

I'm sorry, but all you defending the officers have yet to address the key fact: The end part of the video dowstairs. The guy is shown incapacitated on the floor for several minutes, clearly not able to move, and the crowd of students around them are challenging the officers demanding to know why they are continuing to harm the guy. Yet the fuckers continue to tazer him at least another two times
|
I'll be honest, I got bored of it by then.
| Quote: | I can remember hearing them using the tazer on at least 5 distinct occasions. I'm sure If you counted there'd be up to about 8 or 9 uses of it
|
You heard it 5 times, but you reckon it was at least 8?! Seems to be a lot of tazer-inflation going on in this thread.

Someone (and they look like campus security to me) asks you for ID. The fact that its ID is irrelevant. For someone to, in this case demand ANYTHING from you through the electrodes of a taser is not on. No Justification.
|
They are Campus Police, as mentioned in the article, I assume that carries slightly more weight than our uni security, if they are allowed Tazers.
Other than that, you are also jumping to immense conclusions that you have no evidence for. Your hypothetical situation would indeed be upsetting, but we have no proof that it bears any relationship to what actually occured in this instance. ____________________ >Soultrader Mister James, I bet you are a copper
