Honda CBF500/600, or if you want to spend less, maybe the older Honda CB500. Any of those are cheapish to insure, have honda reliability, will take a pillion and you in comfort no problems and will be pretty fun to ride at the same time
I would also suggest a more powerful practical 600, maybe a hornet or fazer, but the insurance will be costly at 18 I expect ____________________ "he who makes a beast of himself gets rid of the pain of being a man"- Dr. Johnson |

Get an ER6n in black - original.
If you don't wanna fork out the cash, get a suzuki gs500 as its tough as old boots and nippy when you twist that right hand.
Otherwise, the gs650 bimmer is a top bike and not bad as a short-distance tourer for those weekend trips to france. (although at 50bhp might not be for you if you get bored easily.......)
either way, good luck. and i'm sure you'll love whatever bike you end up with.

Yeah, real bummer your getting all that money and your having to buy a bike I'd hate that.
For £2-3K you could pick up some cracking bikes, the market is your oyster at the moment.
Personally, I'd buy a mint Ducati Monster or 900ss. But thats just me. |

Both of those bikes are probably fairly cheap to buy and insure - I'd say for a reason, but that's another matter .
Will you have a years NCB when you're 18? I've seen some 18 year olds get pretty reasonable quotes on a few year old sports 600s (thus I mentioned them) when they've got a years NCB. |

its not the bike its what you do with it that counts ,
Sunday was a bit of a hack rally 4 v old hacks , with 3 newer bikes. I was 50BHP down on the biggest bike there a fazer but still managed a nice little lark on it, but hey a 50cc would have done ok on those roads.
a few litres of FS365 should prevent too much rot though bikes rot anyway , ____________________ Spain 2008France 2007Big one 2009 We all die. OI! My bike might be a bit old and scruffy but it's not a bloody hack.......
Going back OT, I think you're approaching it from the wrong angle carl.
Instead of thinking "what bike shall I buy with this cash" I suggest you start visiting bike shops and just looking at, sitting on, testing (if you can get a test) all sorts of stuff.
The more bikes you look at, the more one or possiblly a couple is going to start standing out to you and saying "yes, I am the bike for you".
Then you start looking at how you can afford it.......... ____________________ Sod falling in love, I wanna fall in chocolate. |

You wrote all that on your SV without a mention of your GPZ.. shameful!
Yes GPZ's are cheap, but so what, I'd have one over a bandit anyday.. infact I do have one. Mines restricted and out paces a FI SV650S, Get a cheap bike, stick the money in the bank on one of those saver things where you promise not to touch it for a year and get more intrest. In a years time you may have thought it through a little harder.. or atleast made your mind up...

Well I use my SV all year round and it still looks like new. It only get's washed once a week, perhaps even every other week and is often literally white with salt. The secret is FS365
The SV has earned the undeserved reputation of having a poor build quality as typically they get owned by newcomers who don't yet know how to look after a bike AND who do a lot of miles. Naturally this combination leads to the bike looking very sorry for itself in a short space of time. If looked after there is no reason for an SV to look any worse off than any other bike.
As to getting boring.... Well I've yet to get bored of mine but if you are used to high revving IL4's or 2 strokes then you will be forever trying to search for power that just isn't available in that range on an SV. You have to ride it a lot lower down the rev range to actually make fast progress. It's a V-twin thing and you will either like or hate it.
They do ultimately have one major ace up their sleeves, and that's as far as handling goes they are the best in their class. They are light, nicely balanced and very flickable. The SVs (faired) also has a sports riding position. All the other faired bikes in the class such as the fazer, bandit, z750s, ER-6 etc have a sit-up-and-beg upright riding position which makes you look 'commuterish'. Something to consider if like me you are vain and think looks are important |

... Point taken!
Mine wasn't any slower than my SV really and they have a great kick at 7k rpm that always brought a smile to my face. One of those bikes that really do punch well above their paper Hp figure They are also very cheap to buy and run and so make great first big bikes.
I brought mine for the same use as Simple mentioned above, as a bike to gain some valuble experience on whilst thinking about which direction to go in. I kept it for a year then brought my SV. I can honestly say the Geeperz is the sole reason why I can now ride my SV to it's max and out pace other riders on 'proper' sports bikes. The little gpz taught me how to get the most out of the power you have and how you don't need loads of power to have fun. GPZ's FTW |

zzr600 - looks a little small for me
bandit 600s - don't know much about it but looks interesting
gpz500 - seem a little "cheap"?
Diversion - don't know much about this either
a beamer650gs - don't know much, probably too expensive or insurance is too expensive
I need fairly affordable insurance, a comfortable riding position that a pillion wouldn't mind either, a decent kick of speed/acceleration with a 33bhp restrictor on it and something I can use all year round without worrying.
|
The ZZR is really too big and heavy to be much cop restricted to 33 I'd have thought. The Divvy is pretty pathetic for top speed and umph even at full power, so restricting it to 33 might bore you to tears.
GPZ - Fun, cheap and light. Has a grin inducing step in power about 7k rpm. Good handling with decent tyres (new BT45s). Would probably take 33bhp restriction best. Withstands weather pretty well. Engine is pretty indestructable, though alternators in the old model are prone to disintegrating.
Bandit - Inline four, which means revvy with a kick up top but with some annoying vibes in the bars if a Fazer is anything to go by. OIl and air cooled engine is wide and heavy.
SV - Flat apparently. I found riding a V-twin (VT500) quite uninspiring in terms of power delivery, you could thrash it all you like for no reward, the only gear worth revving is top. The SV sounds very nice, but that's subjective.
The latter two are Suzukis, which often seems to mean their finish disintegrates pretty quickly without proper care.
BMW thumper - uninspiring power delivery though pretty nippy. Expensive and heavy, but with excellent build quality and reliability. ____________________ I must not be a troll...
