 |
|
I've had the SV for about a month, and some prick has already decided to jump up and down on the gear lever so hard that it has bent the lever down towards the floor, broken something in the gearbox (possibly the selector fork) so that the motor is jammed and won't turn over (the bike is 'stuck' in neutral so can be wheeled around) apart from every now and then when the input shaft from the lever mechanism is wiggled, and then only with a nasty metallic grating sound. What is it likely to have fubared in the gear box, and is it an engine out job to get at?
This happened at college. Some little shit is going to pay. ____________________ Bikes: too many, too much for one man to maintain anyway. |

Oil out, drain coolant, right hand side engine casing off, remove clutch plates and holding thingymajiggy. If you can do that, you should be able to see if there is any damage done to the selectors and what not.
Do it, do it now. Before I forget what the insides of an sv engine look like. |

No, it was parked up in college and some little chav shit has done it. I fired it up and went to leave, tapped it down into gear (hadn't looked at the lever) and there was a nasty metallic noise and it locked at which point i nearly dropped it, that was it. I've got the college to check for anything on the CCTV. God save whoever has done this, if i find out who they are.

So it might not be an engine out job? Phew. I'm afraid the bike is locked in the college compound at the moment, i'm getting it picked up tomorrow so will investigate with gusto. I'm skint as hell at the moment, so i hope nothing is too awry ____________________ Bikes: too many, too much for one man to maintain anyway. |

Thanks for that G, i'll bear that in mind. I'm hoping that it won't be too bad when I open it up, but it does not sound good at all. Should the worst come to the worst at least a new motor shouldn't be too bad to get hold of
In order to remain on two wheels, I've dusted off the DR for a while. To be frank, it felt so good to ride it again, I may just fix the SV then flog it! ____________________ Bikes: too many, too much for one man to maintain anyway. |

Screw driver jammed inbetween the two sets of teeth so it gets difficult for it to revolve....?
I was lucky, on my sv, once I had undone the crumple washer, the nut was literally finger tight. But on my diversion, I was jumping on the torque wrench and it wouldn't come undone. Some are 5nm tight, some 150nm.
There is a special tool you can use in such circumstances but I am not sure how much it is or where you'd get one. Sick'up probably knows I imagine. |

Just chiseled the nut off in the end. Not like it's going back on the road soon anyway

The problem has become rather... terminal. There is now a feck off hole in the crankcase. The damage is so severe it is difficult to tell what has gone on inside. My best guess is the abuse the gearshift mechanism got made it fall apart in the crank case, the actual shifter was wedged between the primary drive gear and the oil pump drive and is bent to buggery. The main damage was probably done when the shifter wedged in the main drive when it was running, the jolt it put through the mounting in the crank case broke it off, and all the little bits of crankcase then went through the motor resulting in the nasty metally/oily mess that came out when I took out the sump plug.
Short term prognosis is it's fucked, I need a new right hand crankcase (at the least, not to mention the gearshift mechanism and possibly the oil pump drive gear and primary drive gear) and it's an engine out job. One side of my head reckons it would be an easier and in the long run cheaper method to try and obtain a second motor and swap it in, keeping this one as spares. The top end is fine. Unless anyone has a right hand crank case going cheap?
This is quite possibly the worst thing that could of happened ____________________ Bikes: too many, too much for one man to maintain anyway. |
