My bike is this colour:

https://www.trenkamp.org/gs500/susi-frontright.jpg

And I hate it.

Would it be a bad idea to change the colour? I might be able to get hold of some different coloured plastics for it and a fuel tank, but will it lose shitloads off of the resale value? I really do hate the colour but decided not to be picky and bought the bike...

Just wondering whether it's worth the hassle/expense of changing the colour as I'm not prepared to do a rattlecan job.

Cheers,

T

Kawasaki green Mr. Green seriously though, silver or black are probably the best options for that style of bike

Did you buy that fairing from method? Looks good.

Different coloured plastics shouldn't detract from the value if it's original colours you're replacing it with.

Personally I'd get some already damaged fairings and add...

Not really. Dealers say this and in their world it's partially true. What a custom colour does is mean it can take longer to find the right buyer. For a dealer, stock turnover is often more important than margin, so for them to shift it in time they often have to knock something off the price. Also, the myth is perpetuated by people trading in - and the dealer might say it doesn't suit their image, etc, etc (which is fine) but a lot of people just fold and say "OK" and let it trade in for less than it's worth cos they want their new toy asap.

This does not change the value any more than getting £100 of a new lid makes the lid worth less.

I've changed the paint on 9 of my bikes, 8 went to private sellers - typically I've got between 10 and 25% more than book price.

Lazy way of changing the colour of your bike: Do nothing other than use it Smile

Within a couple of weeks it'll have a healthy protective layer of dirt built up on it.

For the amount of cost & hassle involved, rather than buying different colour fairings and tank I'd reckon selling it and getting a bike that you do like is a better answer.

But ermmmm, ride it more, rather than worrying about what colour it is. Thumbs Up

but i decided against it as i like the colour of my bike and i dont have 80 quid to spare, and it says honda cup on it which makes it go faster Wink

respraying it properly will cost a fortune
respraying it yourself will look shit, unless you go for a deliberate rat bike matt black look (and this will devalue the bike)

changing all the plastics would cost a fortune

i say live with it, or sell it and buy another bike (maybe a thundercat)

letting the dirt build up is a good idea, but wont really change the colour much

with winter coming, if you ride your bike, you don't know you won't bin it, so i would keep it as it is for now, find some cheap plastics and/or quotes for paint job, then see how well you are suited to the task before spring comes and you really want to whizz off into da sunset. Cool

You ride a GS500 , there are at least 10 breakers nearby Liverpool where you can get plastics all in
for <£100 , for my NTV I can get as new tank undinged , new rear and side panels for less than £60

Leave the poor thing alone, it's only a GS500. Just ride it until you can afford the bike you really want, and when you can, buy it in a colour you actually like.

Agreed, if it's your first big bike it's very easy to become too attached to it and want to start changing things etc... but at the end of the day it's just a stop-gap affair with the sole reason of giving you some valuable experience before moving onto something you actually want. Keep your money for later on. You will only regret it come spring if you flitter it away unnecessarily

Also if you change the colour you are supposed to notify the DVLA and get the V5 changed. Failure to do this could cause complications if one day a police car does a routine number plate check on it Wink
