 |

had to post this after reading the Datatool topic, as mentioned there i have a fairly thick chain which is like a miniature anchors chain off a ship(design and built the same way) but i also want an alarm, cheap, not bothered about it being approved or owt at the mo, suggestions?
cheers, steve.
*edit i suppose it is not strictly like an anchor chain in everyone's view, but it is in mine. ____________________ Roger wrote: Women don't get damp for clingy puppies. Get some better happy pills, hit the gym & buy a medallion the size of a dinner plate. Job done

I cant say from a lot of experience - I havent had a bike for long, much less had one stolen.
But having done the same research recently, I can say this:
1) Unless you are going to get an approved alarm (so you can get an insurance discount) and unless you dont mind your battery running flat on occasion, then dont bother with an alarm.
Just buy a flashing LED kit that makes it look like its got an alarm. Cost you a fiver from Maplin or some such.
2) Get a decent chain. And from the recent video footage I have seen, dont buy Oxford, Abus or any of the other "Endorsed" chains.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VC3hFr8p2ck&NR
3) Cover your bike. The fewer people that see it, the fewer people have a mental map of where they can find bike X when someone wasnts a stolen-to-order. Also, cover deters the little shites from the council estates - its covered, they cant tell what it is, or what protection its got.
4) I have heard a cunning suggestion - but havent tried it myself - and thats to use a baby monitor. If your bike is close enough to your bed (and your street sufficiently quiet), you just go to bed with the monitor - and anyone starts screwing with your bike, you will hear them. |

I dont bother with chains or alarms.
I just tie my matey (pictured here below) to the bike wherever I go.

Dont have an alarm as of yet (will soon. something like an alarmed disc lock as they are nice and small) but I have a chain and padlock which originates from a wheel clamp in south london Its solid and very heavy to carry around.
My other security devices are a pair british bulldogs ____________________ 04' DT125RE (run-a-bout) // 89' DT125R (rebuilt + supermoto conversion)

My Fazer has a Meta alarm, and at times of high-risk, an Almax chain.
Another good deterrent is Datatag. I'm lead to believe that most stolen 'bikes are broken for spares, and by having Datatag transponders or chemical etching on the parts, they become worthless / too risky. There are other tagging systems e.g. Alphadot and Smart Water. Police only need to find one dot / microchip to identift the part, and it's excellent evidence for use in court.
Both my 'bikes have Datatag fitted. |
i have mine alarmed with one that's not approved. reason being is that it does the same thing. cost me £30 instead of £300 (where i would have saved about a tenner. saving what there?).
don't use datatag/smartwater etc... as like it's been said before, if i were a thief and were going to nick someones bike for the parts worth thousands of pounds. i'd say the risk of someone bothering to get their bargain part they just bought scanned by the police, far out weighs the amount of money i'd be making.
how often have people on here bought really cheap parts and taken them to the police just to be safe? not ever amirite?
got it covered. for security, and i feel better that it's not getting nastyness on it.
have a big chain and lock which i don't normally use unless i'm not using it for an extended period of time. ____________________ Sahf East Winnah 4LYF
