The roads on my estate are quite narrow. Every day, without fail, the attached picture happens, several times. It pisses me right off, especially buses - they just completely block my path.
To set the scene:
My side of the road is clear, on the adjascent side are parked cars. I pootle along and the vehicle coming the other way doesnt give way at all - just comes out from behind the parked cars making me have to change my direction and hug the kerb. Or, in the case of buses, drop anchor and wait for them to pass.
I have varying responses dependant on the day I am having/had. If they are lucky I gesticulate and hurl a random expletive. On occassions, when cars have been right over, I just stop, staying on the line I was on, and block the road. Stare - make clear I aint happy, gesticulate, hurl an expletive and move on.
Am I missing something or is the general etiquete that I just move over and let the vehicle pass? ____________________ My fingers smell of your mum. |

its a lot safer for you to move over and let them pass ____________________ "Speed:The thing about speed is that you can't catch the people who've attained it to ask them how they got so fast. I get this a lot, basically I stand my ground and use my lane, if people see you diving over they are gonna expect you to do it, its dangerous to go to the kerb as you could hit the kerb, or not fit through the gap, and the road surface is never good there.
If a car pulls out into my lane as I'm riding I stop and wait for them to go back, if they don't and I'm not in a rush I'm happy to have a stalemate
I get a long road with cars parked like this, and find if I hold my ground and don't move over cars will stop or pull back into their own as well, they have to or they'll crash into me by driving in my lane
EDIT: Thought I'd like to add if the car is waiting for me to go pass, and theres room for the both of us to safely pass, I'll move over and let them through, if they assume I'm going to move over I won't ____________________ Past: 55 Sym Jet, 91 ZZR250, 03 NSR125R. Present: 97 ER-5.

Use your full beam, if this fails, stop the bike in the middle of the road put the side stand down and get off, go up to the window of the car or bus tell them to get the f**k outa the way and your not moving until they reverse up, lock the bike up using a couple of disc locks so they cant wheel it out of the way. The other option is as you ride past take their wing mirror off, or attach some sharp objects to you knee sliders and take the whole side of the car out. ____________________ We're all just born to die. Have you tried a simliar situation on the school run in the morning, in a car, with a thousand kids on push bikes (and on foot) weaving in and out often on the wrong side of the road, parked cars abandoned everywhere, trying to get your kids to school on time like everybody else? This is a scary situation, when the slightest misjudgement could injure someone around you. Add into the equation trying to be courteous to other drivers / riders, who often seem oblivious to your friendly helpful nature. This is everyday driving / riding, and you should not get wound up. I do this every morning, dropping the kids off at school on the way to work, but I don't get steamed up swearing and gesticulating at everybody who wrongs me, because there's just no point. I'd only end up going to work in a bad mood, and because of my mood, I might make that minor misjudgement.
My advice is to keep calm, swear to yourself in your helmet if you want, and stay safe. ____________________ Currently Moto Guzzi 750 Strada, Moto Guzzi V35 Florida, previously Honda CB125T, RD250LC, RD80MX |

I agree if theres room to move over then I would, but if the road is narrow and its going to be a tight squeeze then why should you have to be put at risk by some idiot, another option is reach through the open window take their keys out of the ignition and throw them into the nearest bush ____________________ We're all just born to die. Around my way (to get to work and I generally cycle this) there is a width restriction/speed hump combo. on the road, a "Buses only" lane that skirts it that all the cars get dumped in whilst dropping little timmy off to school and the road either side of the hump has two junctions into the school and is normally coated down either side with parked cars. you can fit a car through the gap and most of the parents seem to open doors without looking, turn into the side roads without indicating and I've even had them reverse out onto the road straight at me with no signals and n checking. The spped hump bit is the worst as there are cars parked on all sides near it and the drivers seem to just pootole along over it, blocking it at times which stops parents using it as a crossing point (it's intended purpose.
Last week I had a van lazily turn across me (on my mountain bike), more of a "drift to the right than a turn", no signals and forced me to a. slam on the anchors (which I hate doing as I've smashed myself up badly having to emergency brake before), b. swerve around him and c. punch the side of the van with a nice reverberating "clang" to wake him up...
I'm seriously considering going the wrong way out of the estate then looping round (adding 5 to 10 mins to a 700 yard trip) just to avoid the maelstrom...
