they rekon about every 300-500 miles for lubing your chain, you can use engine oil if you want its cheap but not that good, most people use a chain lube most car parts palce will sell it, you just spray it on the chain ideally when its clean and after a ride when its warmer.

I'd reccomend a good spray on type lube.. thicker stuff tends to stay on longer

+You should really be oiling it every ride, or every other day, and allways do it AFTER going for a ride, the chain absorbs the lubricant far better when its warmed up.

400miles with no attention you should look at makeing sure its adjusted right as well Thumbs Up

Is it enclosed?

Yeh, you can use 3in1 oil, but it wont stay on long.. halfords do their own brand which was very good (if a bit messy)

I bought a 1 litre bottle of Halfords GL-4 Gear Oil for my YBR. It's a tiny bit thicker than 3 in 1 but still needs regular applications. I've used it for the past 1300 miles there is still 3/4 of the bottle left and the chain is oiled after every other ride or every ride in the rain.

I tried some of the spray on Teflon stuff but It doesn't seem to be good value for money.

I went into halfords today in worcester (wow never thought that end of town had so many chavs). And got hold of some holts universal chain oil (or something along those lines).

My next door neibour recommended i do it with the bike on the centre stand and the back wheel rotating in 1st gear. THis worked pretty well as i sprayed it on the chain as it rotates. I checked the chain tension and it was 22mm on average (manual states between 20 -30mm) i took that from 3 points on the chain to find tight spots etc.

i just have some last questions:

1. How do i know when to lubricate my chain and when its got enough on it?

2. Is there any other running care i should do?

sorry ive been using a scooter for a year or so, and im no wizz at motorbikes (why im here i suppose) Rolling Eyes

There no way really.. it the links being lubricated is important, every other ride should be enough, much better off haveing too much on than not enough.

Tyre pressures (first bike i had it'd got down to 20% of what it should have been within 3 weeks!) oil level checks, oil every 1000miles (if it being run in still it'll need a change more often) keep it clean, it'll be easyer to sell when you decide to

Everyone starts somewhere, though not many will readyly admit it, better to feel a little bit daft to people you may never meet than to end up costing yourself piles of money or crashing cause somethings snapped of!

All this special chain lube bothers me. Really expensive and it doesn't stay on the chain anyway. I seem to put it on my chain and wash it off my rear tyre.
So I gave up on the expensive stuff in favour of the cheaper 'spray grease' @ £1.99 for a big tin. The only problem I'm having is trying to get my metal drive-chain to absorb the grease. Even the rubber 'O'rings wont absorb it either [tongue-in-cheek]
Nevermind, the chain aint rusty and at least it's lubed. One quick spray each time I ride-out and all is well.

I do mine every 200 miles or so. I used to use castrol chain wax (£6 a can!) but I wont be using any wax lub again. Its pretty useless as the wax gets pushed to points on the chain and sprockets that have no wear (tips of the spocket teeth etc) leaving the areas that have a lot of wear with no lube at all!

Im using 151 (I think it is... some cheap hardware store brand) spray grease. Its white (so looks like proper chain lube Thumbs Up), doesnt fling off, costs all of £2 and seems to be better than the wax type lube.

Anyhow I dont even really need to look after my chain because chain and sprocket sets for my bike are dirt cheap! Thumbs Up Mr. Green

Every 2-500 miles according to most manuals/books, though I do it every time I fill the bike with petrol. Take the opportunity to check the tension too.

Put the bike on it's centre stand (or a paddock stand) to raise the back wheel, make sure the bike's in neutral and manually spin the rear wheel round whilst spraying (or wiping) the oil onto the chain. You want to get the lubricant on the pins from top and bottom, not just onto the side plates.

Be very careful if you do it in gear (not recommended).

There are many types about:

Engine oil
Chainsaw oil
Spray on chain lube
Spray on chain wax
Spray on dry chain lubricant

You can get it from any bike shop, halfords and even some hardware stores. Personally I'd avoid WD40 as some say it may damage O rings and it's not a fantastic lubricant anyway.

I prefer the Wurth dry chain lube (which won Ride's lube test last year). Try EBay if you can't get it locally. £7.25 delivered seems the cheapest on there at the moment. Remember to clean your chain every now and then too (use paraffin, £5 for a big bottle from a garage forecourt). With dry lube you don't seem to have to clean it as often as it doesn't pick up the dirt like wet lubes, and expecially wax, tends to.

I got from Halfrauds for my YBR some spray on chain lube in the motorbike section which is like a wax almost which sticks on the chain instead of flying off. It was spot on. Juyst put the bike on the main stand put a cloth behind the chain and got my missus to rotate the rear wheel while i sprayed. Jobs a good un!

Its was in a yellow / purple can,

https://www.halfords.com/wcsstore/HalfordsConsumerDirect/images/catalog/200-228098.jpg

bit like that but halfords own one and a wax easy to find if you have a gander on the motorbike section

Be VERY careful! I think that is pretty poor advice to be honest. There are some pics floating about somewhere of someone who lubed their chain this way, and regretted it after they nearly ripped off their fingers.

There is no need for it to be in gear and rotating, just do it by hand, safe and still does the job.

Good to see another young person on the road Matt, here's some advice from a chap who's been riding for 20 odd years.

Before you ride you should check that your lights, brake lights, horn and indicators are all working properly, it only takes a minute, I do mine when the bike is warming up.

Once a week give your bike a good check over, you can do this when you are cleaning it and it gets two jobs done at once.

Check your tyres for any cracks, splits, foreign objects and tread depth. There is a wear indicator in the tread as a guide. Also check the tyres are pumped up to the correct pressure for the bike. Your manual/owners handbook should give you the figures and most supermarket garages have a FREE air line.

Check your chain for tension and lubricate it as the good folks here have described already.

Check your engine oil level. Put the bike on the center stand on a flat, level surface, there is usually a sight glass in the engine casing that tells you how much is in and top it up to the full level if needed. You should also change the oil regularly. I do mine every 3000 miles but some folks do it earlier.

Check your brakes are working properly. Takes but a moment to pick it up off the side stand, apply the front brake fully on and push. The bike should not move. For the back brake, put the bike on its center stand, push the brake pedal down fully with one hand and try to move the back weheel with the other. Again, it should not be possible to move it.

All the above can be done in less than an hour if you take your time, and you will always keep on top of your bike maintenance.

Ride safe.

Feck this fangled chain loob! In the good old days I used to take the chain off and put it in a heated tin of chain grease to make sure it got in every nook and cranny. There was none of this spray stuff available. Mr. Green
