You need to have a helicoil fitted. So take the head to a local place and just get it done.

Sickpup's in London.
Other than that, I don't know, I've never had one done, or even seen one.

Good luck Thumbs Up

I'm not taking it anywhere, I want to do it on the bike, I'm not taking the head off again and throwing away a brand new £60 head gasket. Laughing

I'll either do it myself or get someone out to do it if it too much of a job.

Thumbs Up

Helicoils are just an over-sized tap with an insert that then reduces the thread size back to the original.

Kits cost from something like £12 upto £afairbit for big ones.

Google found me this guide:
https://www.roadstarmagazine.com/modules.php?name=News&file=article&sid=233

I've done the before with no problems.

Is it a plug hole that is stripped out?
If you do it in position you will end up with swarf in the bore and this may well fuck your engine,
There are better inserts than Helicoils for plug repairs IMHO.
Take it to a machine shop and get their advice, fitting your first helicoil to a cylinder head without the correct machinery (Pillar drill with inclining table or even better a vertical miller) could be a very expensive way of saving money.

No, as my second post says....

Cam bearing cap. Wink

G - Good find. I've no problem doing it myself, rather get the parts to do the job from someone off this site / a fellow biker. Thumbs Up

My apologies for not being able to read!
Could you not drill it oversive and tap out one size up or even open it out to an imperial size?

Now thats an idea!

While being extreemly competent mechanically etc.. (I've built a few engines in my time), I am completely crap when it comes to thread size and wouldn't be able to tell the difference between an M10 or M12 size by looking at them. What do you measure to determine this?

M10 is 10mm, M12 is 12mm IIRC

You may have to worry about pitch, which is something like how many 'ridges' over a cm. That's almost certainly wrong, but it's something like that.

I had a feeling it was that, but, do you measure the bolt, or the hole its going in!? Confused Do you measure the width from the outside of the thread, or the width of the bolt minus the thread!?

Crying or Very sad

If its a cam cap it depends which part is damaged.
If the thread in the head it will likely be an 6mm thread, if the top of the cap where the rocker cover bolts down 6 or 7mm.

If in the head a lot of prep work will be needed to stop swarf getting into the gubbins, basically mask the whole head off.

There is now a new type of helicoil kit available called a V coil. The kit is a lot better quality than the classic Helicoil kit but costs in the region of £30.

I can do these repairs in situ as you need but St Albans is a bit to far for me.

I can drill a 5.5mm hole through a 6 mm rod, is that good enough? Cool

Old Thread Alert!
