I see literally hundreds of people start from a red light, and put one foot up, but they let the other one hang in the air until they're going like 40mph! What the hell is that? I thought it was a noobish thing cause they're scared, but I've even seen people on R6s doing it.

I don't know, i do it too. Let one foot hang and drag back. I think its to help balance the bike when you launch it off the lights. I think racers also do something to this extent as well.

I occasionally ride with one foot hanging down due to having cramp. After spending 8 or 10 hours blasting around on the bike it starts to become uncomfortable and cramp sets in. This is particularly true if I've been on a long ride out which finishes miles from home so I go on the motorway just to get back ASAP. It's then when I'm sat in one position the cramp starts.

I would say people do it out of habit. Its probably one of those things that people do and they don't realise they do it.

On the other hand like Joe, I often ride with both feet hanging down for short periods when my legs feel cramped. Or else I rest my legs on the crash bungs lol.

To keep the balance, its back up when theres enough pace (over walking pace) dunno about anyone else but moveing my leg means shifting arround on the seat, really not good when your about to move off..

I actually quite like the feeling of one foot skating on the ground! I guess it's not that good for the soles of my boots though but kinda tickles! Laughing

As soon as I'm moving BOTH feet are on the pegs, even if I do have to "Pad Down" a few feet later.

I sometimes do it if I'm doing a quick launch.

I have no idea why, it's just habit!

the ped riders annoy me, seen plenty of those "only ride a ped cos of congestion charge" business suit wankers in london, who dangle their legs permanently either side Brick Wall

i pray for ages that they might catch a bit of ground and get their foot ripped into the workings of the back wheel

those who do it on real bikes just look stupid i let it piss me off Razz, i do it the few times ive been drag racing without realising, because i was too busy thinking about everything else, then you get round to it and its like "oooh, foot is still dangling, whoops" riding on the roads i tend to try things like putting my foot down as little as possible, trying to balance perfectly at red lights etc, lifting your foot up for the longest time possible before moving off... before you fall over

so dont really understand people who do the opposite, call me a weirdo Confused

My feet never dangle. I can balance at really slow speeds, so straight after i'm moving, my feet come up

Thinking about it I've just rememebered this...I came to a stop at the roundabout round the corner from me a while back and as I slowed down I tried to keep my feet on the pegs instead of going for the floor.

I was doing pretty well untill the tit infront went to pull off then stalled the car...Cue me panicing and falling to the left, there's a car at the side of me so I put my hand on the sill to stop me from smashing my bike and the car, I looked down and saw THE Biggest jamacan I've ever seen in my life Grinning at me...The old jam role's going ten to the dozen but he just wound the window down and asked if I was alright..I answered yes in a squeaky vioce-straightened myself up and rode off sharpish.....LMFAO

If the traffic is literally stop start a yard at a time then the foot will come down (or stay down)

If I have the space then the both feet come up together.

not only do i dangle sometimes, i sometimes dab a foot down, or hover my foot out if im turning just in case a wheel slips

this sort of thing is more useful in bad weather, or when filtering when you might have to stop suddenly, or something

i know that the bike test discourages dabbing a foot down, but dabbing a foot down at the right moment can prevent a lowside on a light bike and is a useful skill

catching a bit of ground does not result in feet being ripped into the wheel

as for dangling while pulling away, i think its about smoothness. if you move your foot slowly up to the peg, it doesnt unsettle the bike, and if something slips, a dab down might help

An R6 should have taken around 2 seconds to get to 40, not too long to pick your foot up Smile.

A lot of the time people stick their foot out because it gives them an (often false) sense of confidence when the bike feels a bit odd. However I suspect most of the time leaving it down actually does make the bike handle worse, so they possibly keep it hanging out for even longer, believing they are helping to prevent their badly-handling bike doing anything worse.

I'm not sure if the scooter style 'foot out' would actually work the same way a motocross or supermoto foot out would in the case of a low side.

No mate I mean I've seen them ride around with one foot down Constantly, as though the footwell isn't big enough...

Could just be their feet smell Skanky...I dunno...

Did make me laugh coming home tonight, see a ped boi sitting on the pillion part of the seat with his (or maybe her Wink ) feet tucked almost under their ass.

Why would a step through ped have rear sets and, a better question why would they have pillion pegs?

Who are they trying to kid Rolling Eyes Laughing

dabbing a foot down has worked for me a few times on the scooter

motocross style is more foot and leg forward tho i think

while my covering the ground while cornering a bit fast for the conditions, is more like leg out 45 degrees from the other leg, with lower leg hanging down vertically from the knee, foot hovering over the floor

if the back of the scooter slips, the foot hits the floor and you correct the slide without having to think about it, you lift the foot up a bit, and slightly reduce the lean or throttle or both

also, riding with both feet dangling lowers the centre of gravity, which improves handling

Yes

A lot of slides are corrected anyway 'without thinking about it', regardless of foot position. Personally, I wouldn't be too convinced that it would solve that much and suspect doing so is more likely to cause slides that correct them.

Quote:

The centre of gravity is very slightly lowered, however I'd be pretty sure that two dangling legs does make the handling worse. It slightly destabilises the whole body, which isn't a good thing.
