After d!cking about yesterday with the air box and carb etc and re-attatching some bits that honda thought to leave dangling for me (1100mile on, only just discovered), i have found that my NSR has lost its ... umff.

From Idle (about 1.5k), whip the throttle back and it kinda, just... farts at me. Before it used to react like it should, throttle back and revs would rise accordingly.

If you slowly raise the revs to about 5/6k then whip the throttle back, it does what it should, revs rise quickly.

This has dramaticaly effected the acceleration.

The screws on the right hand side of the carb (as you sit on it), one small, other little bigger with a spring on it. i have adjusted them slightly as the idle was a bit low (bout 1.2k), but this was before i took out the box etc, so this shouldnt have affected anything.

What can i do to get back the accelaration my bike used to have? Anything i took out, i put back as was.

You adjusted both screws?

Put them back how they were.

Also check that the fuel pipe isn't kinked.

wouldn't know where they were to put them back. Fiddled both, both ways. Confused

Fuel line no kinked, tank didn't come off, was working with the tank raised. nothing in its way.

Piece of advice.

If you don't know what the fuck you're doing then don't fucking try it!

thanks McJam, thats helpful. Sad

Read in the manual, how to adjust idle. Followed the instructions, that fixed the idle problem.

The other problems occurred when i took out the air box to get to the jubilee clip that wasn't attached to the carb+hose to engine. like i said, put everything back, as was.

I would appreciate ideas on how to fix it, if anyone has ideas or the know how, rather than people re-iterating what i already know (if it ain't broke, don't bugger about with it).

Jubilee clip from box to carb was fine, the one on the other side of the carb was the one that was lose.

Tightened that up.

Theres no holes no split pipes etc.

Is the problem likely to be too much or too little fuel.

Sounds abit funny like the mixture is running to lean.
What happens if you leave the choke on?

I only ask because if somethings not done up correctly and its letting in more air causing it to run lean this won't help at low revs. Also will cause loss of sucktion to draw petrol through.

I flogged it up and down the bypass and tried to fiddle while i was out on the road.

Actually pulled the choke out while was idling and it chugged and stalled. Starts first click though, but that could just be because it was warm.

Maybe sound like a dumb question, but not if you don't know.

Which is the pilot air screw (yes, i really know nothing about my bike). But if you don't ask... you will never know, you also don't get ridiculed as much Smile

I did though, after a comment from Scotty, go out with a mag light and check i had done up the jubilee clips. I hadn't (Yes, i'm tit).

I had definitely up the second one because i remember cursing the dealer, but i hadn't done the one from the airbox to the carb after i re-fitted it, the one that was fine in the first place.

Which is the pilot screw? What effect does it have on what. don't laugh, i'm learning!!! Crying or Very sad

Hi

The pilot screw adjusts the idle mixture strength. By the sound of it your bike is running too lean on that adjuster. According to the manual the pilot screw on a late nsr should be 2.5 turns out. The pilot screw is the small screw.

All the best

Keith

piolot screw = idle circuit adjuster.

Face it, you dont have a clue what you are doing. You messed with it, take it to a dealer/dyno and pay up!

Sorry, but even with the best will in the world, the people who know on this site wont be able to help without seeing it and poking it.

You did oil the filter?

Not being funny but why have a go at someone for being interested and trying to learn more about something?

People join forums like this to talk, get help and learn more about something.

SO? Seriously, i do appreciate help you have offered in the past but i don't need or want people telling me to leave well alone.

Whats that saying? something about learning from mistakes? ever heard it?

Fucks sake! talk about rubbing your nose in it!!!

Glad ur all sorted Very Happy

Thats a bit out of order. So what if he doesn't know what he is doing? IMO one of the best ways to learn is by trial and error. At least that way you have hands-on experience and you learn some more about the bike at the same time.

Its true though.

Read some books. Start with old car books which are nice and simple to get the hang of engines. Move onto bike books or workshop manuals. Then tuning books.

Read "zen and the art of motorcycle mantiance" and see what sort of person you are. Some people are just not ment to work on engines.

I agree, you only learn by doing it yourself, but know your limits.
