My dad gave me his zzr (99) last summer because he didn't use it anymore and i didn't have a bike at the time. Anway i used to rag the shit out of it and managed to fucked the pistons. Anyway it has been sitting in the garage ever since doing nothing. I want to go touring for 2 weeks in summer with a mate and this is ideal to use. I want to get a supermoto for fun over summer but maybe repair this and use it to get me around europe.

Now is it easier to have it repaired, maybe do it myself - garage jobbie or just get another engine and fit it in. Not sure how cheap/expensive hard or easy it is to do. Confused

Cheers. Thumbs Up

Hi

Depends on what you have actually done to it.

Not sure how you have screwed the pistons up, but the most likely cause would probably be running it out of oil. And if so it is likely to have killed most other things in the engine.

What makes you think you have killed the pistons?

If the pistons are damaged and the only thing gone then you probably could quite easily fit it. However remember the ZZR600 gearbox is not known for its long life.

How the hell have you managed to abuse one enough to kill it.

All the best

Keith

If you have the tools, the manual and the time do it yourself, haveing it repaired at a workshop isn't really usualy a sensible option money wise really..

It also depends on what exactly is nadgered.. pistons or the sleeves? how many? will it need to be rebored? did the valves suffer? e.t.c. was it oil starvation finished it off? or something more sinister?

Open it up, lable everything, carefully baggie things, take pictures of each stage, your not going to make it any worse, if its really terminal you could break the bike for spares and easyly buy another with the proceeds (allthough its a damn nice bike and would be a shame)

EDIT: in light of the extra info i'd ditch the engine for an engine with no gearbox (which are plentyfull, gearboxes are not), use your working gearbox or spend the £30 or so the parts cost and you'll have a goodun.. after that i'm sure you'll be a bit more carefull with it Laughing

Well it sounds like its running on 3 cylinders, making a funny knocking pinging sound like loose metal and won't drive. It had already done 50,000 miles, not been used for ages then i would not really warm it up then redline the first 2 or 3 gears because the roads here are quite easy to do it on.

Also i had a bad habit of cruising at like 80-90 then dropping 2 gears then accelerating really hard. Just because i hadn't been on a bike in ages and missed the acceleration. Cool

Learn to ride, learn to spell, learn some grammar and learn how an engine works.

Yeh i have seen a couple of e model engines go for about £150 with about 20-30k miles.

Funny thing with this bike is my dad had it new rode it everyday for 4-5 years. Did 50,000 miles and it didn't cause him any problems. No breakdowns or anything, well apart from the dreaded kawasaki downpipes. Not even the 2nd gear problem.

I had it for 3 weeks, back caliper broke off, chain snapped and then the engine went. Confused

Price up four piston kits and a full gasket set (absolute minimum you'll need). Then price up a complete second hand engine.

Bet the engine's cheaper, certainly easier. I would guess maybe £300 for a good one.

Not exactly suprising given how you described riding it.

That will kill an engine, but more by accelerating wear rapidly rather than a sudden dramatic failure.

Suspect you have overrevved it and bent some valves then.

All the best

Bigger than you, uglier than you and a 100 times a better rider than you. Now fuck off and contemplate on how you fucked up a perfectly good motorcycle by riding like a prick.

Break it. Throw the thing on ebay.

I used to want a zzr until I heard of all the common engine/gearbox problems they seem to have. Ebay is usually full of buggered engines. Get something else. Thumbs Up

All i want it for is a bit of tourning. A few hundred for an engine and insurance then its fine. Don't wanna spend big £££ on another bike for the occasion. I'm a student now Razz

Might have been towards the end of its life, but sounds like the abuse you gave it was akin to assisting suicide but shooting someone.

Do a compression check. Check the valve clearances (see if any are stupidly wide). See the results. Maybe drop the engine out and whip the head off. Find out what the problem is then decide whether to fix that engine or buy another. Although there is a chance that any engine you buy will have problems.

All the best

Its his bike, if he feels like he wants to thrash it to get full enjoyment out of it, its entirely up to him. Hes not breaking your bike so chill out.

All he wants to know is the most economical way to fix it. Doesnt seem like a subject worth getting pissed off about.
