 |
|
My dad gave me his zzr (99) last summer because he didn't use it anymore and i didn't have a bike at the time. Anway i used to rag the shit out of it and managed to fucked the pistons. Anyway it has been sitting in the garage ever since doing nothing. I want to go touring for 2 weeks in summer with a mate and this is ideal to use. I want to get a supermoto for fun over summer but maybe repair this and use it to get me around europe.
Now is it easier to have it repaired, maybe do it myself - garage jobbie or just get another engine and fit it in. Not sure how cheap/expensive hard or easy it is to do.
Cheers. |

Hi
Depends on what you have actually done to it.
Not sure how you have screwed the pistons up, but the most likely cause would probably be running it out of oil. And if so it is likely to have killed most other things in the engine.
What makes you think you have killed the pistons?
If the pistons are damaged and the only thing gone then you probably could quite easily fit it. However remember the ZZR600 gearbox is not known for its long life.
How the hell have you managed to abuse one enough to kill it.
All the best

If you have the tools, the manual and the time do it yourself, haveing it repaired at a workshop isn't really usualy a sensible option money wise really..
It also depends on what exactly is nadgered.. pistons or the sleeves? how many? will it need to be rebored? did the valves suffer? e.t.c. was it oil starvation finished it off? or something more sinister?
Open it up, lable everything, carefully baggie things, take pictures of each stage, your not going to make it any worse, if its really terminal you could break the bike for spares and easyly buy another with the proceeds (allthough its a damn nice bike and would be a shame)
EDIT: in light of the extra info i'd ditch the engine for an engine with no gearbox (which are plentyfull, gearboxes are not), use your working gearbox or spend the £30 or so the parts cost and you'll have a goodun.. after that i'm sure you'll be a bit more carefull with it ____________________ >RidingSkills<->Tech Tips<->MyBikes<

Break it. Throw the thing on ebay.
I used to want a zzr until I heard of all the common engine/gearbox problems they seem to have. Ebay is usually full of buggered engines. Get something else. |

Its his bike, if he feels like he wants to thrash it to get full enjoyment out of it, its entirely up to him. Hes not breaking your bike so chill out.
All he wants to know is the most economical way to fix it. Doesnt seem like a subject worth getting pissed off about.
