What does everyone use to shrink heat shrink?

Wall-paper heat gun, hairdryer, lighter? What works and what doesn't?

what i used(only done it 2times) is a turbo lighter, the wind proof ones that you cant see the flame. just hold it onto what you want to heat-shrink but dont hold the lighter too close to your 'work' but just enough to heat-shrink it(1cm say) otherwise hold it too close and the shrink will catch fire.

im sure theres better ways of doing it and someone will tell you how to do it correctly... best to do it correctly accually!! Very Happy

EDIT: i personally dont know how to do it correctly hence the lighter Wink
im going to keep my eye on this thread and learn how to do it properly Thumbs Up

Anything that's hot aye. So then putting it behind the exhaust of another bike should work....(running, obviously)

I use a gas powered Soldering iron, the exaust vents from the heat catalyst works magnificently. I imagine it's similar to using a paint stripper gun. I've had some disasters when using lighters so i always avoid that now.

Exactly as above or if im working away from my house without my trusty gas soldering iron... a hair drier works well but its a slow task and no where near as direct as the heat from the soldering iron Smile

Hi

I use a lighter, but move it around plenty so no one area gets that hot.

All the best

I regularly use heat shrink and i have always used a butane blowtorch set on the lowest heat (yellow flame).Heat shrink does melt as said before but if you continually run the torch up and down it shrinks perfectly into place and the added heat over a heat gun makes sure it shrinks right down flush to the wires thus making them waterproof. Thumbs Up

Soldering iron. Just run the tip along the tube. None of the problems of using a naked flame and its nice and controlled. I've used heat shrink up to 50mm diameter, to shrink that we used a kettle.

I also use my soldering iron but I use the barrel, not the tip as it can leave residue which screws up your soldering.

Cheers

Hot air gun.
Soldering irons are useful when there's nothing else around but don't heat the heatshrink evenly like a hot air gun does Smile

The best cheap method.

Get an ordinary adjustable lighter and use the blue part of the flame, which is much cooler than the yellow and will not burn the plastic. Turning the flame up can help as you get more blue part.

Of course, don't confuse this tip with turbo lighters, which have an all-blue flame.

I've always wondered why the blue part is seemingly cooler than the yellow part. From GCSE science I recall the blue flame on a bunsen burner being hotter than the yellow flame...

Different fuels burn with different colours. Its LPG vs Natual gas, so colouring is going to be different. Google should answer which gets which flame colour. Thumbs Up
