Evil or Very Mad Is driving on a frosty morning without clearing your widows first counted as Driving Without Due Care and Attention, or even Dangerous Driving? Cos it bloody well should be!

I only do a short commute (2 miles or so) and with it being so cold this morning there was no way I was even considering the bike so once I was up and dressed I went out to the car, started the engine to get the heaters going, then came back in.

By the time I'd had my breakfast and put my boots on all my car windows were clear, the engine was idling smoothly and off I went nice and safely.

So WHY did I continually see morons trying to peer through a tiny hole in their frosty screens, washers going like mad to no effect, wipers skidding over the frost? Or windscreens clear but side windows totally opaque? Back windows totally bolloxed even on cars with rear screen heaters? WHY are people so dense for the sake of at most an extra 5-10 minutes on their morning commute?

Had at least 3 very near misses this morning, totally due to other people's laziness and disregard for the fact that they couldn't see and only avoided because I could see and had time to take avoiding action! Evil or Very Mad

Bloody idiots.

Thanks for listening!

Dangerous Driving I believe.

Jon got rear ended by a woman who couldn't see where she was going because she hadn't cleared her windscreen, we reported the accident to the police and I believe they will be charging her with DD. We've not heard anything from them though... some chasing may be in order.

If you drive without your vision corrected (i.e. without glasses) then it's DD, so driving with an opaque windscreen should also be considered Dangerous Driving in my opinion.

Without sounding like I'm defending this, as I'm not, not everyone can go out and leave their car running to warm it up. Can you imagine living on a top floor flat, then leaving your car running while you pop back up! Confused

I agree they are idiots for not clearing their screens first, but not everyone has the luxury of a driveway or garage. Thumbs Up

There are other options, a jug of warm water will sort it out as well.

NOOOOOOO!

Cracked windscreens happen cause of that. Glass doesn't deal well with rapid heat transfer!

De-Icer is a god send! Apart from when you store it in the glovebox... Laughing

I'm well aware of that thankyou. Like I said, I'm NOT defending them! Read my post again. Wink

But, a jug of warm water does not stop the inside misting up does it, or warm the engine up quicker like letting it run for 5 mins!!!, but if you have aircon, whack that on and it clears in seconds.

Thumbs Up

Hence I said warm water, not boiling. Wink We've done it on at least 4 cars for at least 10 years every time it frosts up, and never had a crack appear on us.

I am lucky enough to live in a quiet culdesac now, true.

Previously when I lived on our local shithole estate (where if I'd left the car running and unattended for more than 30 seconds it would have probably been nicked) I would go out to the car 5-10 mins earlier than usual and sit in it til it warmed up.

It's not hard. Don't start to drive til you can see where you're going ffs! Rolling Eyes

Ice scraper anyone?

I made one in year 8 design and technology and my Dad used it to scrape our windscreens for at least three weeks until it snapped in half Laughing

I'm lucky that I have the luxury of it not really mattering if I'm late for work but when it's icey you start out earlier, and if need be, sit in your far watching the windscreen de-mist listening to the radio and sucking mints/boiled sweets.

I've seen an option for some Volvos (in Sweden at least - not sure if you can get it in the UK) where you have a power cable that comes out the front of the car. Simply plug the Volvo into the mains and it warms itself up and de-ices itself while you eat your breakfast. Then it's all clear and toasty warm for you to set out.

Still no use if you live on the 10th floor though.

Pfft, just move to the south coast - only two frosty mornings in Bournemouth so far this winter! Razz

Anyways, frost on the car is the perfect excuse to be late for work in my opinion! 5-10 minutes? Best give it 15 just to be on the safe side... Wink

You could at one time buy an alarm (for mainly automatics) that would allow you to remote start your car.

all the doors would be locked (and any other steering security would be in place) so harder to steal while you have your breakfast.

I'm quite fortunate that i have a garage so the morning windscreen clearing session i avoid..

Ive got 2 sets of keys on my 206. I go out with one set, Start the car up. The lock and alarm the car with the other set of keys. Thumbs Up

It takes about 5 minutes to warm up and defrost.

It takes 5 minutes wheather its ticking over, or wheather its driving along a road. So why dont these people just start their car up, and sit in the car for 5 minutes until it all defrosts.

They have to sit in a cold car anyway, Wheather they are sat still or driving.

Its lazyness.

As already mentioned, I think it's classed as dangerous driving. It's awful to see drivers desperately trying to de-mist their windscreens while peering out, and can result in tradgedy.

Just over a year ago two girls left my work around 7pm. Of course at this time of year it's frosty and dark outside.
The driver didn't clear her windscreen and as she drove through the industrial estate she hit the back of a parked trailer at around 35-40 mph. The driver died at the scene and the passenger had four broken limbs and was in a wheelchair all of last year.

It may take an extra 10 minutes, but recon I'd rather drive with a clear view.
Take care out there.

I thought Ford had the sole rights to that? Or is the Seat's system different?

I can vouch for the ford one, it's nothing short of magnificent, many a morning I'd be sat blipping the throttle on my old carb fed car to keep her alive and warm the engine, then, after 10 minutes of that, the pissy little blowers would make an attempt to clear the screen, this took a minimum of 15 minutes. Usually, during the 13th minute, my dad would stroll out, start the car, press a button, spend 30 seconds pointing and laughing at me, then clear off.

Not funny.

I'm just waiting for him to get a crack in the windscreen, man is that thing gunna be expensive, a tiny, non heated one for my AX cost me £100, his Galaxy windscreen's about the size of my car...

Imbecile couple who live across the road from us both start their cars early in the morning and leave then running with the heaters turned on full. As if its not bad enough having to listen to their engines when i'm still in bed she has her radio blasting out as well.
One of these days i'll get in her car and drive it off to teach the ignorant cow a lesson.

Indeed I could. But first I have to put all my winter riding gear on, Undo 3 padlocks on my shed, Uncover y bike, remove the chain & shackle lock, Refit the battery, take the bike out of the shed, relock the shed. Its quicker by car, its warmer and I can listen to the radio.
