Anyone had this problem????
I pulled into a station at Chobham about a week ago and I pulled into a pump the far side of the court and opened the cap stuck the nozzle in waiting for the idiot at the counter to allow the fuel to flow. anyway, I see him waving at me to change pump. My first reaction was that the pump was faulty. So I change to the next row down. began the same normal procedure, and still he waves me around. There were no signs of the pump being out of order. So I moved again to the front row and he gave me the green light!

At this point am fuming, it is on my route to work, so as you can understand I was in a bit of a hurry. I filled up and went to pay.

Got to the moron at the cash register, I said "What the hell was that all about?" He remarks "We have had a lot of ride offs with bikes" so I gave him an icy look and thought Whatever just pay and go. he then starts to blabber on about all the problems he has had. So I said "Look, I really dont have time to listen to your problems, can I just pay?"

So due to these idiots driving off without paying it wasted more of my time and made me look like an idiot driving from pump to pump looking like a naughty school boy being sent to the front row so the teacher can keep an eye on me!

I thought the petrol stations/companies had this problem sorted with their big brother(cameras) clocking the number plates on the vehicles? Is this right? and what would you have done? Also if they have these cameras in place why on gods green earth did he have me jumping through hoops?

Unfortunately all you can do is vote with your feet (wheels).

There is no "right to consume" in law and so a retailer is not obliged to sell you anything in any way other than they choose to do so.

Just go somewhere else. Smile

Not that making you use the front pump is going to stop someone from driving off anyway.

If he has had problems with ride offs, perhaps taking the helmet off would have gotten you served at the first pump.

Most camera's are looking at the front of the car/bike... And can also be easily messed up by leaving lights on.
Why stations do not move them to look at the rear is weird, as it is a lot harder to blind a camera.
Seems strange that it makes a diffrence which pump you use as they will never get out of the shop in time to catch a bike anyway....

Possibly.

My local gas station when I was in Houston had the following policy (for everyone):

Either:

(1) Put your credit card in the pump before fuel will authorise. Fuel costs are automatically charged to the card.

(2) Go into the shop, pay for your fuel in advance. Say you hand over $20 - then if you needed more than $20 it cuts out at $20, or if you needed less you have to go back in the shop to collect your change.

At least they were accusing everyone of being thieves - not just the bikers.

Personally I like the idea of pay-at-pump. I've seen 24-hour unmanned petrol stations on the continent, where you just stick your card in the pump and serve yourself. Great idea. Do we have any of them over here?

There's one in Milton Keynes that I know of, an ASDA, which is a lot cheaper than the others in the area. I guess if they don't have to pay the monkey in the booth they can pass the savings on. Gets my vote. There was one in Northampton (a BP), but they reverted back to normal pumps some time back.

My local Tesco once upon a time had pay-at-pump but they've since disabled it. Shame... seems like a step backwards to me. Guess they must have had a problem with dodgy cards or something.

LOL! Ive actually ridden off without paying....well...

Start of dec, filled up at my local garage as normal and was so pre-occupied with a domestic problem of my friends that i just rode home. It wasnt till about 20mins later when i opened my wallet i realised i had too much money......click.....on with all the gear, and i burn it over to the garage at the speed of light!

I rush in and explain and say im so sorry i was just not with it tonight and of course i will pay. Fully expecting them to be well pissed off and say theyve already rung the fuzz....THE TOTAL OPPOSITE! They told me i was the only person to ever come back and because the camera they have faces forward so they got no number plate anyway! They were delighted i had come back and kept thanking me!

Laughing he showed me the form they have to fill in for when it happens, the only details they had were white male on a red bike, £5. LOOOOL!

I used to work in a petrol station, most of the times people drove off without paying, they were in stolen cars.

Must pop down there and check the price/pumps out.

I had the police send me a letter saying I'd driven off without paying at 3am from a local garage (tucked up in bed at the time) which was the night before I had gone out and bought a new number plate as my front one had come off. Quickly realised that the plate must've been stolen so reported it there and then over the phone to the police and they were happy. Didn't even need to see the receipt or anything for the new plate...

K.

Theres one in my town, the co-op decided it was a waste of time them having a small shop at the petrol pumps when the supermarket was right next door, so they converted the little store into offices and now its pay at pump, sometimes its cheaper than at the petrol station, and it's always deserted so you don't need to worry about ques.

I used to use the Tesco pay at pump, now use the one at Asda. Been a looong time since I had to go inside. Not that I ever had a problem with the cashiers or anything, it just takes alot longer.

Everyone that has a problem with paying/removing helmets etc should just find a local station with pay at pump, it's great.

Funny! i had the exact same thing happen to me at my local station! Was never a problem when i was on my little yammy virago but the first time i pulled up on my bandit my little ethnic friend behind the counter refused to put the pump on. I had to drive round to another pump so he could get my plate on camera. When i went to pay i just said " dont worry mate, not all of us are theiving c**ts"
he just smiled. i give the sod the eye every time i go in now. haha

I've always preferred the Pay at Pump both on my bike and in the car but there seems to be a diminishing number of them in the Midlands.

Any ideas why? Is it more expensive to maintain a petrol pump than to pay for a member of staff?

Further north they seem to be increasing. I think it's Asda policy to put only pay at pump in new or refurbished builds. One where my parents live has had its petrol station moved and is now only pay at pump.

Personally I prefer Asda. The Tesco one I use still has no chip and pin. Found a card on the floor the other week. If I hadn't have been honest I could have filled for free (don't worry, still kicking myself for that one)

Thumbs Up
