Good bikes, comfy and fast enough to break the law quite easily.

Very reliable in my experience and the d1 is cheap to buy now Thumbs Up

I bought a ZZR400D as my first big bike, and have now fitted a 600D engine to it.It now goes like stink,is comfy for hours on end,and parts are cheap and easily avaliable.Just watch out for gearbox problems and rotten standard downpipes.

That applies to the 600s I think, as far as I recall the D model 1100 is the equivelant of the E series 600.

As for reviews of the bike - very very fast, comfortable and practical, well made and reliable, looks a little dated now and is heavy compared to modern stuff but is a very good bike, the sports tourer of the mid 90s no question!

excellent bike (the E model is anyway) The one major thing to watch out for with them is the dicey gearbox, they all clunk going into 2nd but tonk it about and change up from first - make sure it stays in gear and does not jump out or click about - I have just lost my 2nd gear and need to strip the gearbox down when I find a decent replacement...

Apart from that, fast, comfy and relatively reliable, nice and roomy but could use a better suspension it has to be said, its not bad just a little on the soft side.

regards

You'd be better off with an E-model than a D mate, although the D is by no means a bad bike.

As has been said, watch out for if the bike jumps out of 2nd gear, a common problem on ZZR's. If it does then walk away as the replacement part is worth pennies, bur requires a full strip down to get at. Also if you're using the bike all year, clean her very regularly as build quality isnt the best. Calipers seize up very easily, fasteners seize and can be a bastard to get loose. The susupension is quite soft.

If you buy one you wont be dissapointed though, seriously quick bike, really comfy, great for pillions, has luggage clips on the side and aint that shabby round the twisties either.

I moved from a ZZR to a J Model ZX6R. The 6R is alot sportier, suspension is harder and handles miles better, its alot lighter to.
Its quite comfy for a sports bike aswell, I went to up fully loaded up with luggage to Brands WSB and the bike was brilliant.

So if youre looking for something sportier than your bandit and your budget stretches to it, go for a 6R (infact, mines for sale Wink )

If you're after all day comfort and do alot of miles on motorways etc, go for a ZZR600E mate Thumbs Up

Chris

Get a Thudercat!! I've owned both the ZZR and the Cat and the cat is far better IMO. I thought the riding postion on the ZZR was a little odd.

Chris_biker.... If the replacement parts cost pennies can you please point me in the right direction for them.... You need to replace 2nd output dog, top output dog, 2 selector forks and selector drum all of which cost a fortune from Mr Kwak and I am struggling to find another cost effective source Very Happy.

for another bike probably it works out cheap - its a couple of hundred sheets - but whn you have a bike thats only cost about a grand its a fair percentage. You can use that as a bargaining chip in the bikes sale though (slight clunk in the gearbox, common fault £350 to fix £500+ for kwak to do it etc etc )

cheers

Suspect the selector drum would not need to be replaced generally, although any gear you need to change is likely to be expensive.

All the best

Its usually the selector drum thats the problem, the top edge rounds off which then causes the jumping and excessive wear on the dogs. Out of all the gearbox replacements I have read up on it has been the same parts list I gave above that needed the replacement.

Hi

Once in gear it is the dogs holding it there, not the selector drum.

All the best

But they never quite get into gear properly with this problem, the rounding off occurs on the selector barrel as in the image. Once I have the replacement parts for my ZZR I will post up photos of the before and after damage on the drum and the wear on the 2 dogs mentioned.

Its worth noting that to buy these parts new I worked it out to cost 400 euro's without any shipping included, you can get a new engine for about £300 with less than 5000 miles on it if you look around so you have to weight up the pro's and cons of each.
