 |
|
Are there any cheap manchester races? , I remember talking on the chat room to G about it where there was a series of racing on cheapo 500 twins where the CB500 (and the CB500SS which is a cheat) were raced , and there were tons of GS500s.
Do any such racers exist in Manchester and where? , I think I could just about manage to get a CB500 , mod it for some slowish racing , and if I like it maybe trick up a 400 and go for something bigger , like Aly Bayley (that guy had 9 NC30s and 4 NC35s , and sold them all cept one to keep racing) , hence the need for it to be cheap , since I'm not really wealthy enough to go get the latest ZX10R and quite frankly don't want to be going after ZX10Rs on probably an old FZR1000.
Anythoughts?

Have you done trackdays? Unless you can hold your own in the fast group, there is no chance of being competitive when racing. ____________________ British beauty: Triumph Street Triple R; Loony stroker: KR1S; Track fun: GSXR750 L1; Commuter Missile: GSX-S1000F; Cheap project: CBR900RR FireBlade

Hmm thanks,
MZ racing has semi whet me apetite for this now, I can corner pretty well , and have been known on familiar roads to leave bigger beefier bikes to eat my dust.
Tracks sans cars , other bikes and licence risk I reckon I can take it up a few notches.

Would be a good place to start .
Also see the Sticky at the top of this section.
Trackdays are relatively a lot cheaper than racing for more time, so personally I'd advice sticking to them until you feel you can get more out of real-racing.
Trackdays 'entry fees' - From £50 - £250 depending on time of year and track for 6/7 x 20 minute sessions.
Racing entry fees - From £135 - £235 for 4 x 10 minute races over two days. Also get a ten minute and a 3 lap practice session.
Racing does get better for practice days where 7 x 20 minute sessions does actually mean 20 minutes pretty much, with a lot less red flags etc. |

Be all the better when you go around the outside of people on their shiny GSXRs .
Seen CB500 cup riders kicking arse in fast groups before.
The only ones likely to be laughing at you are the slow riders on those GSXR1000s that have to have something to feel good about, so get past on the straight .
(Itchy: Note edit to my last post, by the way) |

Hmm sounds quite interested.
GS's are raced quite a lot in the US so there's a lot of racing parts for them as well (Progressive springs, etc)

heheh buy that NTV in Darwen (£200 v good condition) and lets go NTV racing ,
riding older rat bikes = more shame on super sports riders when you beat them , and no shame if you lose cus you have a crapper bike!.
I did meet an insane GS500 pilot down south he was a very good rider , and regulary wasted 600 riders , many of my old clan did not like him.
Hmm VFR400 racing might be something I can streach to as well , race NC30s are dirt cheap , have 70bhp and are cheap, perhaps Toby if we get into it we can share a van?. ____________________ Spain 2008France 2007Big one 2009 We all die. nc30 have approx 56-58bhp standard. 60-62bhp once running perfect with exhauset, filter(less) and carbs setup properly with bigger jets. Still..... nc30 sounds good, if you ever get one and do brands, let me know! ____________________ Current : '08 Yamaha FZ1s

400s aren't that cheap to race, they go wrong a lot as they're mostly getting on a bit now, are expensive to tune to be competitive, you'll need lots of spares and equipment.
The CB500 cup is as cheap as you'll find, you can buy a race ready bike for around £800 and running costs are minimal, they crash well and are easy and cheap to fix. I'd probably have a look there first!
As for wanting somewhere to race near Manchester, there are a couple of tracks not too far away but most race series tend to road up and down the country, expect to travel a fair bit! Brands, Snetterton etc are a fair run from you, worth the trip though.
Word of warning - once started, racing WILL take over your life, it'll eat all your time and money, you'll think of little else, and work is just something you do between race meetings to pay for it! |

So in really to go racing all I have to do is turn up at a track put on my gay zip up two piece bring me ACU gold lid , tape up the glass bits of the bike remove mirrors ,before racing
pay my money , register , and start to fly round the track? (I have no van or money for one so I'd have to ride there and back).
its really that simple? (iffy since if I wreck the bike = no transport home!). ____________________ Spain 2008France 2007Big one 2009 We all die. No, not that simple, but it's not that hard.
You need to get a race licence from the ACU, this will cost you £42, plus £7 for an orange novice vest that you have to wear till you've done ten days racing (and finished). As a new licence holder you also have to attend a one day course in Rugby, cost £50, and you'll need to get an eye test, say another £20.
Then you will need to join the relevant club, usually £20 - £30 annual membership.
You're now licenced to race, but once you've paid your entries (say £120) you'll need to get yourself and your bike through scrutineering before being allowed out on track. Your bike will be checked for mechanical condition and that it complies with ACU regulations (including having lights etc removed, not just taped up), and your clothing is checked. You'll need one piece leathers, good leather gloves and boots, and a good helmet.
Only then will you be allowed onto the track at a race meeting. |

Blimey even cheap trackdays are comparatively expensive.
gotta get paid more, before I'll dip me toe in , the ACU would be shocked at the state some of the bikes I've ridden on the road (but have passed MOT) , ____________________ Spain 2008France 2007Big one 2009 We all die.
