Probably my most hated thing that anyone can say.

I have nothing to hide but when I hear people say this about subjects like proposed ID cards and new laws it makes me want to punch them. Are people really that short sighted or apathetic about our eroding liberties? Do they believe everything the Government do is for our benefit?

It really boils my piss and the next person to say that in earshot of me is going to get a punch.

i dont see why the government should have it all their own way. They take at least half of eveything i earn, probably more if you count the extra i pay for things, that is because the person selling it has to pay taxes too.

I think I'm entitled to hide a few things, from their sticky mitts (theiving bastards).

So i object to anything that strengthens their hand and that doesnt benefit me.

Im not aware of one useful reason for having ID cards, so having to fork out for one at some point in the future does not please me.

Far more sensible in my view, would be to computerise medical records, so in an emergency, doctors know eveything about the person they are treating.

on the other hand...

anyone with a photocard driving licence is virtually carrying an ID card as it stands. All it would need is a few extra bits of info storing on it, that could conceivably help you in some curcumstances (eg: blood group)

Not saying I agree though as I dont think it will acheive what the govenment want it to. If anything it will drive the "illegals" further underground and help make them harder to track

if there's anything I've learned from working in systems for the last twelve years, it's that everybody has something to hide. For the sake of common taste and decency, I'm much happier not knowing other people's secrets and make sure to give them a respectful distance whenever I'm exposed to them.
It also strikes me as slightly hypocritical that the people who use this argument are usually old dears who wear far too much make-up Rolling Eyes

Next time somebody accuses you of having something to hide, just suggest they strip naked, then accuse them of having something to hide when they refuse. Afterwards, politely remind them that there's a world of difference between a hackneyed cliché and an actual argument

There's a story in the news today about a government proposal to install infra-red cameras in town centre lamp posts, to allow "x-ray" photographs to be taken of people walking past.

Basically, most clothing is invisible in the infra-red spectrum, so they'd be able to see if you were hiding a gun or a bomb under your clothes.

Yes - it's in the Sun, so not exactly a reliable source.

Yet another proposed infringment on our privacy though.

I admit, thus far, the only thing I've done about it is whinge on an internet forum. Other countries in the EU that has some Euro-crap balls imposed on them just dismiss it out of hand. Why not here in the UK? We just seem to suck it all up and take it. Maybe it's because if we vote for a different political party the faces in government change but their policies stay the same.

It also amazes me that people on the whole are not at all interested in this subject. They'll be the one's wondering how it came to them having a camera in their front room.

With reference to my left wing Nazi comment, I was using it in the same context as safety nazi.

This government are probably as authoritarian as Nazi germany, if not more so. So, left wing Nazi is fairly appropriate!
