Sounds like a classic case of partly obstructed mesh filter in the petrol tap, second choice dirty air filter, closely followed by corroded connector somewhere in the ignition system - if it's really 'old'.
You didnt say how old the bike is or what model, mine is 30+ year old 125S and thats where i'd look for this sort of problem,
If none of the above solves it then take it for a run and see if it happens at high revs in all gears, do a plug pull and post back, by then the post may have been moved to the workshop section

Also thinking it might be the needle in the carb, if the bikes been stood a long time at some stage the needle can get coated, or might have been bent during cleaning ____________________ 1975 CB125s, 1991 GN250, 1990 Ducati Paso 906
