havent investigated yet cos i just got to work but thought someone might supply the answer before i go home tonight.

just noticed oil on my left boot where it contacts the gearshift and theres some oil around there on the bike.

is it likely to be a gearshaft oil seal or is there something else around there it could be?

Clean all the oil off and then have a look where the leak is coming from. Wink

Could be anything, your the only one that can tell, if its coming from the gear linkage shaft then chances are its the seal...or the output drive shaft seal?? Thinking

GS500 is well known for the gear lever oil seal failing.

I don't think it's a big job to rectify so stop worrying.

Hmmmz or Method of this board may see this thread and help you out.

yep oil seal on the gear selector, fairly common, Very Happy
i should really get around to doing mine.... nah fuck it Very Happy
its a matter of digging the old one out and pushing a new one in,
not a real major,
you just have to take the sprocket cover off, gear lever, and drain the oil Very Happy don't forget that:D

T1z3r, buy one tomorrow (google fowlers suzuki), it'll arrive on saturday morning and can be fitted on Sunday. Be about £6 inc delivery at the most.

Or do it the t1z3r way, wait until the bike has dumped all of it's oil and running dry, blown the engine and THEN look to replace the gasket on the dud engine.

Yep, gearbox output shaft seal.

However, there is one other option that may be causing this, i had the same problem earlier last summer.

Basically the way the damn front sprocket cover is made, all your chain lube and gunk from the road collects behind that casing, when you lube your chain or you get some water up there from the road or rain etc, it hits the top of the sludge pile that has collected behind the casing, and dribble straight off down the side of the gear lever and that side of the cover. As its dribbling from the top of the sludge pile you find that it looks black and can be mistaken for oil Thumbs Up

Check that first, but you should be able to tell as soon as you take that cover off, very easy to do - about 5 bolts and your in. You just need to take your gear lever off first Thumbs Up
